Member site: captive content or download?

I'm about to launch a new membership site. Tons of material to help people get through a pretty complicated government process.

It doesn't lend itself to a lot of fresh material, but the government process the user has to go through is lengthy and I'd expect members to stay until that is complete.

Along with videos, etc., there will be about 10 ebooks members can access.

Now, I'm thinking of just just displaying the ebooks on screen for members and preventing downloading of the ebooks so that the members stay for a few months at least. If I let them download I suspect they will download everything and then cancel. Also help prevent piracy of the material.

What do you think? Would you be upset as a member not being able to download material to view offline? As I said, ebooks are only one aspect of the material.

People pay to view things all the time, so they don't have to be able to download anything. It might be a good idea to tell them the material is for online viewing only so they don't have an expectation of downloading the material.

I would not explicitly say no downloads--I would probably let them download something, like an outline of the process or some tips on getting through the process or something like that.

But I would say don't worry about it. After the pay, just let them view the material.
