Wordpress Multisite is the worst thing since fried chicken. Alternatives?

I have been messing around with Wordpress Multisite and, for the first time, Worpdress has disappointed me. My world is shattered, but I remain to ask fellow Warriors this question:

What alternatives to Wordpress Multisite have you had the most success with? I am looking for something easy to moderate, intuitive, etc.

  For how powerful it is, it is very convenient at making new sites. The issue comes when customizing these individual sites. Is there something painfully apparent I am missing?

You can load up as many themes as you want and use any of those themes for any of your multi-sites.

I think you need to be in your main admin and approve each theme for multi-site use.

Is that where your running into trouble?

I second the recommendation to learn how to use child themes if you are customizing a theme for each site on the network.

You can use a variety of themes depending on what type of site you want, which other blogging platform or whatever allow you to do that. Wordpress is amazin
