I guess it's now more monetized than ever. I'm fed up with all those stupid ads of girls wanting to chat with me. What makes me wonder, though, is that it seems like many people are still entering only one word in the search engine and expecting any good results.

If I am not mistaken, google usess all searches conducted with that keyword for their data. So they would use somebody searching for "free porn", as well as somebody searching for" make money from home".

Personally I believe that humans tend to build up their tolerance with pornography very quickly, and something that was exciting in 2006, seemed like boring old stuff in 2007. I believe that is what driving such a spike in search results. But that is just my personal opinion.

I still wonder what and if there is a marketing lesson to be learned from this data.

There is a very old trick that can be applied. These are among the most competitive niches too for obvious reasons, so tough players are in them.

If you get deep enough into subniches you can find under the radar web 2.0 properties easy to put your links on and rank on first page.

I can think of a couple reasons why "porn" traffic is increasing.

Some of you are too young to remember, but there used to be this thing called "video rental stores" where you would go and rent a tape (later DVD) of some movie you wanted to see. In many, there was a "back room" with a curtain or whatever that housed porn tapes. If someone wanted to watch porn, they had to go back there, and everyone else in the store got to watch them, know what they are doing, and judge them ("perv"). Then, they had to face the clerk with their selection.

Online, there is no one to judge them. It's relatively anonymous. So, all those folks that WANTED to see porn but felt too self-conscious about getting it can now get as much as they like.

Also, there is a generational shift as to what is considered "appropriate" versus "taboo." I am over 40 now (yikes!) and when I was in my 20's, most girls wouldn't be that interested in seeing porn, beyond initial curiosity.

Now, most of the 20-something girls in the office at one of my jobs actually watch porn and even discuss it. One even does so AT WORK. It isn't taboo, or considered "male" any more. So - you have a huge new market/population coming along that wasn't there just 5 years ago.

Finally, the number of internet users is steadily increasing across all demographics, so total search numbers for all topics (but particularly popular ones like porn-related searches) are going to steadily increase too.

            Just my thoughts.

After reading some more of your comments here something came to my mind.

Porn stars were really considered dirty in the past, but nowadays porn becomes a part of pop culture. So it's okay to be a porn star and talk about it, some of them are invited to shows or even make music or movies.

I don't see any harm in this, as long as you know that a porn movie is most times as far from reality as an action movie then feel free to enjoy it.

Thanks GeorgettaSterling some good points about how many people are freed from the social stigma by becoming anonymous and the increase in Internet users in general.

Consider also that Google (and the others) have a predisposition to avoid porn in their results so typing in 'sex' might get you WebMD and a discussion of sexual related topics.

Surfers realize that porn is not misconstrued with clinical matters and it really is a more specific search term. It will surpass sex as a term because I think many who type in 'sex' are in fact looking for 'porn' the colored sex line should in reality be much lower on the chart.

I propose that 'porn' as an intent is the highest search value being entered, and those entering the word sex are doing so in error whilst actually looking to surf porn.

What's our IM take on this? Porn sells. If we 'porn things up' in our ad campaigns then we should see a comparable increase in CTR. Of course Magazine and Television adverts have known this for years.

    I don't see anything surprising.

Sex and porn will always be #1.

It's pretty simple, just about everybody on the planet (and a couple of astronauts in space) like either or both.

Could be a number of reasons for the rising trends for "porn" over the past 5 years. My guess is as it's become more freely available, your average non-paying surfers are indulging in more and more of it. Search for porn today and you can get for free what you had to pay $40 a month for five years ago. More free stuff = more searching for it.

I wonder if it also a sign of change in demand. Ether people want more porn now than they did in 2004, or thhey simple learned to look for it online as opposed tto other places.

Interesting. Not to mention a little sad. One reason is the rapidly falling morals of society. Just look at what's socially acceptable today, and compare it with what was acceptable 20, 30, or even 50 years ago.

It's amazing how quickly society changes these days.

Another reason could be the rising number in internet users.

not to get all smutty, but my partner enjoys it too (female).

I think it is healthy for both males and female. JMHO.

It is just the time change and a different era. I think more people openly express themselves and are not as conservative as we were in the past.

Whether that is a good thing or a bad thing....it is obvious the internet is both good and bad. The darker side never really gets discussed much.

Let me get this straight: there's now a .xxx suffix?
Hmmm... Wonder how many porn sites will actually use it.
The .xxx suffix will definitely be banned at all libraries and
internet cafes, which would limit the number of surfers to
      the more popular porn sites.

Using it might hurt a site's traffic and rankings, especially if Google
      decides to stigmatize the .xxx.

Of course, non-porn sites may also use this suffix (though it wouldn't make
much sense-unless they're doing it for uniqueness or kicks).

Porn's not a need, it's a want that folks treat as a need.

Ewww... This thread is making me feel a bit dirty, gotta take a shower

On another forum, I had heard a guy who runs a porn site saying that he hardly converts. I don't remember precisely but I think the ratio was 1:22,000+

The guy also gave reasons for no conversions. According to him, almost all the traffic was from India, Pakistan, Nepal and neighboring countries and the market was jobless people surfing from home (as porn is blocked in offices). He even said that they don't even click on adsense and are too busy watching the action.

Its a "free information" market, not worth venturing into. Moreover, many people are aware that it is available for free now on thousands of sites.

I consider it a useless niche. Even if one makes a website on it, he's just wasting people's time. Make something which helps people, not spoils them.

and compare it with what was acceptable 20, 30, or even 50 years ago.
Acceptable has very little to do with it. Pornography has existed since the beginning of time.

You can find pornography from any culture at any point in history. Even the cavemen were scratching boobies into cave walls.

It's really only in the US over the past 100 years that sexuality and pornography became so taboo. Europe has a completely different attitude about the stuff and let's not even talk about the Japanese.

It's more about accessibility. It's easier to get information now than it ever has been including pornography.

Through the internet people have free access to what they want, apparently they want more porn.

If the internet had been around in 1950's and McCarthy didn't ban it as a communist threat, porn would have been just as popular. I've seen those old B&W stag films, what's going on today isn't anything new.

I have some adult industry related ideas on my endless TODO list. It always falls to the bottom though. Whenever I do something online, I think "would I do/say/talk about this in front of my kids?" Don't get me wrong! I think as far as the product goes, I'm an average red-blooded american male. But, if I made a million dollars selling it and my little girl asked me how I made a living, it would break my heart to tell her.
