Why You Won't Make Money Blogging

Articles like these is why it's so great to have a place like the Warrior Forum - especially for easily impressionable newbies. I wonder how many thousands of would-be bloggers this nut job discouraged with his my-way-or-the-highway Newsweek article:

Growing Rich by Blogging Is a High-Tech Fairy Tale - Newsweek

And yes, I know the article is from 2009, but it still illustrates a great point: Always get a second (or third) opinion.

He based his "get rich" experience on AdSense?

    That was his first mistake.

Other types of routes (i.e. not AdSense) can be much more lucrative, especially with the work habit this guy seemed to have.

He must have an enormously big opinion of himself to assume that if it doesn't work for him, it won't work for anyone else.

He said he posted 10 to 20 times per day. About what?

Blogging works when you post useful, entertaining, educational, humorous, informative content that people want or need to read (or watch in a video). I can't imagine one person can do this 10 to 20 times per day.

In fact, I avoided blogging for a while with my offline business because I didn't think I'd have anything worthwhile writing about. However, once I got started and strive to be helpful in some way with the information I post, then targeted traffic arrived ... and by targeted, I mean buying traffic.

Wow, 1.5 million visitors and only 1k made from AdSense? He definitely didn't do his homework. I make 5 figures per month on autopilot from AdSense, but of course I'm a good boy and do my homework!

maybe the guy dont has a good and proper layout for adsense who convert well.
if was my blog, it has 15% of CTR, i can make 225k clicks
my average its $0,50 per click... So... More than $100k in one month.
i know some warriors saying about 50% CTR or more, but i never see.
                regards,

                  Stive,

Care to share what themes you use and the layout for your AdSense? I know I have been struggling to get any decent CTR on my posts. Thanks.

Um sorry but there are lots and lots of people who make 5 to 6 figures a month on adsense alone. You just have to know what you are doing.

Even with Adsense, he should have been killing it with that traffic!

I agree, you probably won't make any money "blogging". Does anyone here wanna know what I had for breakfast? Or my quirky thoughts about various celebrities? Or some other contrived $hit that happened to come to me while using my blackberry in a cab? Nope.

Now maybe if you're a real interesting character and have been blessed with great gifts for doing that sort of thing you may get lucky, there are a few. But it's like saying you're gonna make your living by putting up videos of your cat on the internet and getting famous, because your cat is obviously the most funny and original cat out of all the other internet cats...

Most of us just aren't all that interesting

Now, niche/review sites, I don't think of that as blogging, and yes you can definitely make some money doing that! Then, when your friends and family wanna know how you're "magically" making all this extra cash from off the internet, you've also just become a little more interesting!

I really try not to use Internet memes to express myself (too often), but I can't help myself: EPIC. FAIL.

He has a very narrow-minded view of how to monetize blogs, if all he can talk about is Adsense. It is no wonder he wasn't able to make a living with his blog - it's a shame though that he makes such sweeping generalizations here that are inevitably going to cause impressionable newbies to give up before they even start.

This guy had a very funny, a very entertaining blog. I really enjoyed reading it.

But again, it worked as a personal blog. It wasn't about any topic in particular.

How the hell do you monetize something like that?

TechCrunch was sold for $25 million. It pulls in around $10 million every year. That was possible because it was focused on one niche (startups). Gizmodo is fantastically profitable because it again, focuses on one niche.

Its all about focus. Imagine a magazine titled "On Everything!" that had 500 pages filled with anecdotes from random people. Would it be read? Perhaps - some may derive voyeuristic pleasure from others experiences. But would advertisers want to put their products on it?

Highly unlikely. While an IBM wouldn't mind putting its ad next to a 1000 word blog post on some new database startup, it definitely wouldn't put up the same ad on a blog about how many times I brushed my teeth in the morning.

1.5 million visitors a month in a well paying, targeted niche like Insurance would easily net you a million dollars an year.
