Do You Get Traffic With or Without the Help of Google?

The recent Google algorithm change appears to have wiped out several people's online businesses. Others have flourished because of the change. This seems to happen every time that Google decides to make a change.

Some would say that it's stupid to put your online business in Google's hands. Others say that it's the lifeblood of getting a continuous stream of traffic without having to constantly bust your butt with traffic generation.

I'm wondering where you guys stand? I know that a combination of both is ideal. But if you had to choose between one method or the other, focusing entirely on Google SEO tactics or relying entirely on generating your own traffic despite your standing in Google, which would you choose?

The search engines have always been rather insignificant for traffic generation for my sites. They are all in very competitive niches, so it is impossible to rank anywhere within millions of pages from the top in the SERPS.

Yeah, I definitely use Google. The way I see it, Google is a necessary evil for Internet Marketers.

I agree with Kevin, Google controls like 80% of the traffic, but the problem is that it fluctuates a lot. It's almost like it changes its mind all the time, haha.

I do a bit of everything so my traffic is diverse. For some of my websites, Google accounts for most of the traffic while for some Google is insignificant.

But in reality, Google may be responsible for a lot of my traffic since most of the other things I do indirectly get traffic from Google which it then funnels to my site.

Most of my traffic, as in 100%, is referred from websites that have syndicated my content. My websites don't rank in Google. For me, nothing has changed, it's business as usual, and that is the way I am going to keep it thank-you.

I get a lot of traffic from Google but their algorithm changes never have any adverse effects on my traffic levels. They tend to focus on getting rid of (or devaluing) low quality sites and links, so it's only a problem for people using low quality strategies.

What works now is the same as what worked 10 years ago underneath all the gaming Google manipulations.

Have great content and get links from relevant high quality sources.

For me, a lot of my traffic is from Google so I wouldn't discount this search engine. But I am also seeing traffic from the other search engines (ie Yahoo & MSN/Bing). I'm also getting traffic from other webistes (eg forums, blogs etc).
