Is top of page 2 better than bottom of page 1?

INTERNET MARKETING

I know you have to get to the bottom of page 1 to get to the top of page 1...but has anyone seen better results from the top of page 2 as opposed to the bottom of page 1?

I'm pretty new to this, and I am pretty anal about tracking analytics - but in my newest niche I saw pretty good traffic from the top of page 2. Now I am ranked 8 or so for my primary keyword and am getting almost zero traffic. I'm sure that will change as my site trends towards the top of page 1, but wanted to see if others had had the same experience.

  I'd say yes actually. Weird but whenever I search for some good sites to whatever topic, I just look for it in the top most results in the page and when I get to the 5th or 6th one, I just simply turn it on the next page. When I noticed this, I asked some of my friends if they do the same and answered yes. Just an accident knowing but since then I got this feeling that most people do search like that and so my answer to your question is yes.

  Although in theory what is quoted above is perhaps right, the difference in traffic is usually so immense that almost everyone would prefer a page 1 ranking.
  
  There is current reseach which even suggests that lower page 1 ranking an do better then mid page 1 rankings, but that is another topic...

  I wouldn't spend time pondering that question, and keep working on getting higher instead.
  
  If you managed to get at #10 on page one, then you can get to #9. etc. etc.
  
  Even if you came to the conclusion top of page #2 was better, there's no way to control it exactly.

  Would you point me to the research you are talking about? I'm pretty sure I can get to #2 or 3 over time for this keyword, but #1 is going to be tough.
  
  Your comment is interesting as you look at high traffic/competition keywords - if you can get to the top of page 2, bottom of page 1 that might be good enough.

well I would say it is a toss up because being on page one is always good but it is the bottom and I would think most people view 2 or 3 pages in so being at the top of page 2 isn't bad either.

Yea i agree with WilliamLark that its really a toss up. The top page of page two might be slightly better for views but being on the first page of Google is where you are always trying to get to. Once your on the first page you will always be trying to push the site higher.

what I have discovered is that if you are not number one on page one than you are basically wasting your time. 50% of people click on number 1. 10% click on 2 and its downhill from there.
