Do you have a Good Computer for IM?

Hello , I was wondering how many off you have good computers, for me I see it as vital to have a good one.The amount of time it saved. When I get my first IM cheque I'm going to buy my self a new Graphics Card.

What are you views & Specs?

• I have a Dell XPS 400 that is my workhorse.

Original specs are listed here, but I've modded a few things over the years:

Documentation

Also have dual 32" screens. It's been an awesome machine, but at 6 years old now it's time to invest in a new one, just in case.

I also have a Dell Inspiron laptop that I use for work, as well.

Without a computer, most of my business (online and off) would cease, or at least slow down considerably. So I make sure that never happens.

I am a hardware nerd, still using my approx. 5 year old quad core which is overclocked to 3.6Ghz. I build computers myself. The laptop is broken, furthermore i use another PC as HTPC (home theater pc ) for watching movies.

For IM, certain computer power, a fast internet etc. is certainly beneficial..especially if you run many programs at once which i often do.

I have a very powerful machine but I don't think it's all that necessary for IM. I'm running a Core 2 Extreme with 8 gig of RAM. I'm also running Windows Server 2008 with Hyper-V so at one time I was hosting my own websites. I recently changed that because the dynamic DNS service I was using screwed up and I couldn't update my records anymore. Virtually everything I do on this machine for IM makes "0" demand on the machines resources except video editing. Everything else I could do with a laptop. Of course it would be a pain in the butt because the laptop doesn't have dual monitors. I usually have 5 or 6 programs open at once.

All that being said I just like fast powerful machines... Come to think of it I like fast powerful cars and boats and motorcycles and...

The truth is that virtually any machine today is way more than fast enough to do anything needed for IM. 99% of all speed issues that people have with their machines is due to the crap that they allow to get on their machines.

Probably the #1 thing you could do to address all speed issues is to get a quality anti-virus / anti-malware like Trend Micro. Stay away from Norton and McAfee they are resource hogs. You want something aggressive with a small footprint.

You also don't want a bunch of stuff running in the background. Probably shouldn't have any more than about 50 processes running at any given time. Clear out the startup menu. Google "startup Programs MSCONFIG"

It amazes me sometimes the work people can get done on an older, slower machine. Perhaps I'm spoiled but my quad core custom built Windows 7 Ultimate PC with 8GBs of RAM and a 2GB video card is essential to my workflow. Having dual 22" monitors and high speed internet, I can't even imagine going back. I am now even up to 3.5TBs of storage space, truthfully though I have a hard time finding things sometimes.

I think PC power is one of those things where, until you've had it, you just don't feel its necessary. One thing which I wish I could shout from every rooftop though, definitely buy a custom system or build your own. Per dollar, you are getting much more in reliability and speed then you ever will with any of the big brand names. They operate more off their brand name instead of having to compete in the market at the parts level so instead of quality they go for the lowest cost part they can get. With ten years experience, this is something I truly wish everyone knew about.

It is an Acer 5050 laptop and this thing has took some beatings over the years.

I replaced the hard drive coz the last one crashed on me.
I dropped it a few times.
The fan works overtime, constantly.
I have replaced 2 power packs.
It has had about 5 major virus attacks.
I run a ton of programs off it daily......

...and the freaking thing is still going!!!

I've been rocking a gateway since early 2008 and its still going strong.

1.8Ghz Dual-core processor and just 2GB of ram. A 22" widescreen monitor and a nice 512mb graphics card (from when I did video editing work).

I was on the verge of moving over to a mac machine full time (there is already one in the house) but then I discovered Windows 7 and never really looked at anything else after that.

When it comes to IM, unless your rocking serious automated link building software, a simple netbook would get the job done. For those who are graphic designers, obviously your going to want more bells and whistles.

I work primarily on my small Lenovo Thinkpad X201 laptop (like the one seen below). Before that I split my time between a pretty decent (but very outdated) self-built desktop (Athlon XP 2800+, 2GB ram, XP Pro) and an atrociously flimsy 15" Acer Aspire 1355LC laptop, which was falling to pieces and on which the battery lasted only about 30 minutes, lol.

This X201 of mine is only 12.1" and very light, but it flies like crazy. Cannot recommend it highly enough. Though I think that would go equally for most of the Thinkpads (with exception to the Edge series, perhaps, which aren't really "real, traditional corporate Thinkpads").

They're very well built - exceedingly tough. Well worth the extra cash if strength and stability are of utmost importance to you.

That's where older machines don't hold up, imo. Without my upgrades, I wouldn't be able to keep up with the work I do now. I usually have a dozen proggy's running myself, and at least 2 browser windows with a dozen tabs in each, so I can't afford to get bogged down.

Search through the off-topic forum. You'll find at least a half dozen recent threads of people asking opinions for new laptops/desktops. Of course, you'll get lots of different opinions, but Mac and Dell's are definitely at the top of the list.

If you're a musician or graphic designer, Mac is your best bet. For business or personal use, save your money and buy a Dell. You can't wrong with a Dell. This is my 2nd, and every family member and friend I know has one based on my recommendation, and everyone absolutely loves them.

Having one custom built is definitely a good option. I recently looked at Dell and, putting in all the bells and whistles I wanted including accessories and screens and such, it was around $7,000. Trust me, I could build the exact same computer for less than half of that, and it would be an absolute monster.

That's true. People get all kinds of crap on there machine they don't know about. Most of that sort of stuff can be stopped (or at least slowed down immensely) just by changing a few settings.

Wait until you have a dozen programs running in separate windows, a half dozen different desktops, and music playing in the background. I'd be willing to bet your CPU would stay at 100% and you wouldn't get much done at all. In fact, it would probably burn up fairly quickly. While some comps are certainly overpriced, there is a HUGE difference between a $200 eMachine and an $800 Dell, even though the 'features' list may look the same on the box.

Here are my specs:

2.8 GHZ Quad Core Processor, 8 GB Ram, 1000 GB Harddrive, Windows 7 Premium.

I just use it for simple everyday task

What you should do on your computer depends on what you are into.

But the point is, what difference does it make the kind of computer you have? What you can do with it in terms of Internet Marketing depends entirely on your IM skills ... not your computer.

Yeah, right. I've done it with an old, slow machine and dial-up internet, and trust me I'll never go back. I couldn't even put into words how much more productive I am now because of a good system and connection.

And just wait until that laptop crashes and you're out of business for a few days to a few weeks. You won't be thinking that cheap computer is such a good deal, then.

Obviously, you have to start with what you can afford, but if you're doing this for a living, you really need a good computer (not necessarily the most expensive, but rather a good, reliable one) and a fast connection.

But if you're a professional IM'er, meaning you do this for a living, you can't afford to not invest in a quality computer. It would be like asking a professional auto mechanic to start buying all his tools at Sears.

Also you sort of do need a fast up to date comp for im, ESP if you're doing any video. A 10 min video takes like 2-3 hrs to encode/render and that's on a good comp. Can't imagine how bad it'd be on an old comp.

I have a Dell Studio 17" laptop with 4GB of RAM, running Windows 7 that I use for most of my work - it makes it easier to carry my projects wherever I go.

For when I'm doing a lot of writing and want to be able to see multiple documents open at once (like when writing an autoresponder series for example), I have a 32" monitor that I can use in a dual display setup with my laptop screen - good so you can drag open windows from one display to the other for easier viewing - very cool, but it takes a little getting used to at first

I used an Acer One netbook for over a year until I decided to spend some cash on a new (but still cheap) laptop. I now use a compaq presario cq62-238dx and it does just fine.

I have 3 computers that I built myself. Two of them are 6 cores and one is 4 core. 12 gigs of ram in each, Video cards in each for 2 scrrens, all in full towers. the newest one I made is the intell core i7 6 Core runing at 4.6, XLG case with EVGA MB, 24 gigs of ram,3 video cards so I can run 6 screens on once with no lag, with 10 TB's harddrive and one piss of girlfriend. Its way more then anyone will ever need for IM but I run alot of programs watch movies download upload, as well as design my many site I just started. If you get a car you want the best if you have a house you are going to put in the best and make it so it lasts. So dont think twice pay the money and get your self the computer of your dreams, you'll thank me later.

How can you have 6 Cores? I7 , I5 and I3 are Quad core. Three Graphics Cards! I thought you could only get SLI?

I game on my PC so I need it to be Good. If you've ever heard of FSX , it takes a Good computer to run That on Max.

sorry it took me so long to come back to this thread, a i7 970 is a 6 core cpu. About 80% of mobo's supports crossfire, and if you are looking to spend lil bit more then me then you can go with a server based mobo. Did you see the new 2011 chips? They are so bad azz, I am thinking about selling one of my gaming rigs to get the new chip sets.

I have a pretty powerful desktop that I custom built for myself a few years back. Also have a low end Acer Laptop that, ironically, gets used more than the desktop. (I hate being tied to a desk all day.)

I have an Acer laptop and a netbook which are both good for mobility. But I'd really like to have a desktop with a huge monitor. It would be much easier on my eyes when I'm writing. It's on my list of "things I want to buy."

Killed a $400 Toshiba Laptop in first 3 months (Jan-March 2011'...keyboard went berserk! -no spills, liquid, nothing...just a cheap piece of crap!

It's under warranty, but I have procrastinated trying to retrieve the files, so I can send it out to Texas...or somewhere for free repair.

Currently renting a Sony Vaio 17" Laptop w/ 600gigs....not too smart at $180 month, but I figure when the big bucks start rolling in, I'll buy a MacBook Pro, and use the Sony as a nice write-off for taxes

To further add to the above...I have no internet options where I live. We have wifi, but try uploading a 1GB website with that...not happening!

So, to add to my growing expenses and uncanny determination to succeed at IM, I bought a Verizon Wireless MiFi 4510L 4G for $150 (after $50 rebate by mail) and committed to a $80 per month plan which grants me 10GB. (To put it simply, the little thing kicks ass!)

The first 3 days, I uploaded 6 websites, and ate up 4.5 gigs. The month's not even over yet, and I'm at 14.8 gigs right now:confused:

Supposedly, it's $10 extra per GB after the first ten gigs....next month, I should be able to throttle down on the high usage a bit (I hope:rolleyes

Just about to finish building my new main machine and will be retiring my 8GB Intel Q6600 to testing purposes / VM - just got my final part delivered yesterday an Asus MB, so my spec will be (for the geeks):

Antec P183
Asus P8Z68 Deluxe Sandy Bridge
Intel i7 2600k
16GB Gskill RAM
Intel 160GB SSD
2TB WD Caviar Black
Noctua NH-D14 with Indigo Extreme Thermal Alloy
2 Hot Swap 2.5" Bays
3 Hot Swap 3.5" Raidsonic bays (so I can swap drives across from my server build below)

Currently using a Triple Samsung 2693HM setup on a Chieftec Triple Mount modded a little for the corner of my room.

Have to also finish building my Home Server which is a monster - possible 64TB if I fill her up with 2TB drives - Windows Home Server Forums • View topic - First WHS Build - Project: Massive Black - MediaSmartServer.net - this one has been a long build but hopefully worth it and fairly future proof ...

It depends on what you actually do in your Im business. For most people the integrated video and sound cards are just fine. Chances are even with the most RAM and fastest processor you're not getting the full performance (out of Windows)from your equipment unless you actually modify your start up sequence. Most people leave services running for apps that they never use running all the time and then open a bunch of other apps which really slow things down. I agree with another poster that the Internet connection is a lot more important.

I had an old computer that was too...slow to do anything with it so ive spent about 1300$ to buy a new desktop with a 24 inches screen. My work is so much easier. If you don't have the money to spend, you could always upgrade your system for a lot less or buy a used laptop that is in a good condition

I have an old macbook pro core duo, and I put a 750gb hard drive in it. I dual booted it with windows and mac, so i am not limited to which programs I can run. I do most of the keyword research and blogging in windows, and use mac for some of the video marketing stuff. Also have a 22in monitor attached. Its a portable solution, but also works well at home. I plan on building my own desktop when this one craps out, and I want to get another monitor soon. In my opinion you can never have enough.
