I am a newbie to IM and I'd like to start by asking a basic question on writing articles. Are successful article writing marketers experts on the topics that they are writing?

For example, if I find a niche product that has a hungry market but I know nothing about the product or the market but I do know it is a hot market, how do I start to become a good article writer on that topic?

Use your likely keywords and Google them. This should provide you with a ton of information. Also Google as follows: article: keyword

This again will give you a lot of targeted information on your subject. Read the resulting articles and then write your own, IN YOUR OWN WORDS. Never plagiarize!

Also, there is a brand new WSO selling here on the WF, which was asked to read and review. It really is a complete course on Article Marketing and it's being offered to Warriors at a big discount. I recommend you take a look:

It depends on why you're writing the articles. I have written thousands, yes thousands, of articles over the last two years.

Here is why I write these articles:

          Earn money ghostwriting.

Use the articles for my own sites for fresh content.

Distribute the articles to ezine directories to get backlinks

Put the articles on hubpages, blogger, zimbio, squidoo etc. etc. to link to my sites

Combine the articles for an ebook I can give away.

Distribute the articles to my relevant lists.

If I'm not an expert, I research using offline and online sources. I don't use wikis because they're user contributed and I don't know if the person behind the wiki knows what they're doing.

Take some time to do some research on the topic and you should be able to get a good idea of what to write. That's free.

As Jack suggested, you can also just outsource the article writing. That is certainly easier...if you choose a competent writer.

    Research, research, research.

The best use of Wiki is looking at the end of the article and finding the sources. You can sometimes follow those to accurate information.

Offline magazines and the library are also good resources that are often overlooked by those looking for quicker solutions.

Interviewing people in the industry you're writing about can prove useful.

Or just hire a writer to do all of the above for you.

This was a good post. Just wanted to add that forums are also a great place to look for information about niches, particularly stickies or faqs.

Before writing an article, perform a Google search for the keyword you plan to target. Check out the top results, preferably authority sites. If it's a health topic, for example, look for WebMD, MayoClinic, or MedlinePlus and use the information located there. Read up on the topic to educate yourself. Then, minimize your browser, open a Word document, and start typing.

Definitely going to have to agree with all of the post before me on this one. You don't have to be an "expert" on the topic but you should grab as much good relevant information as you can and start from that.

Spend a day or two and gather as much information about that particular niche by reading different articles, forum posts etc. On the 3rd day you will be in a position to write an article. Obviously your grip on that niche will improve over time.

Joining related forums would also give you so many ideas, tips and advice to improve your writing skills as well.

For example if you have to write on "mortgage" then try to participate in mortgage forums and learn from there.

In my experience my answer to your question would be no they are not experts. If you outsource you will want to give them a URL or two where they can retrieve information.

I had this problem when I first decided to write. I went to EZA, picked an article, and rewrote it. I did this for two reasons:

    1. I could use it somewhere.
    2. To learn the niche.

After awhile you'll notice writers on any article about any niche will give basically the same advice written in different ways. If you've caught on to it that far you'll discover you don't need their source material anymore and can write about the niche from any angle simply out of what you've learned.

This works well for me because it makes you have to learn something using more than one method. You have to read it and understand it, then you have to write about it enough to show any reader that you do, and you have to keep repeating the process until you don't need their help anymore.

Well it sounds like you have been doing some reading on finding a hungry market(LOL) I'm not going to touch that statement.

Article writing is a traffic source. If you are sitting there visualizing writing a few articles and you are on you way then I hate to be the one bringing you the bad news.

Most good article writers have a system. First, there is no data to support that a long article gets more traffic than a short one. I would start with this formula.

Start writing articles by identifying the problem that you are going to solve in the first 100 to 150 words.

Second, write the solution in the next 100 to 150 words.

Lastly, in the bottom 100 to 150 words tell them how it relates to the person who is reading it. But keep in mind that people won't subscribe(assuming you are sending them to a squeeze page) to your list until they have to read about five of your articles and see that your name is spread around the internet.

I hope that helps you understand article marketing a little better.

          I like this part

A Theater Instructor of mine has a similar rule for summing up things most plays all have in common and it looks a lot like that in fewer words.

"Tell them what you're doing to do. Do it. Then tell them that you did it."

This assures you always have an opening and closing paragraph when you apply it to article writing

The successful ones? Yes. Most of the others? No. That's why you see so much garbage floating around on the 'net

If you have found a niche that you want to jump into, the first thing you need to do is learn everything you can about it. Who's interested in it? Why would someone be interested in it? What kind of benefits can people get from learning more about it? What kinds of questions do people have about it? What kind of information are they looking for?

And, as some of the other folks have said, you have to make sure to do your homework carefully. There is alot of mis-information floating around out there. Find as many reputable sources as you can, and glean information from all of them.

A big part of article marketing is establishing yourself as an expert. Until you've done some major research, you cannot do that.

If you want a bit of practice first, try sites such as constant-content. I've only made a few sales there when I first started, but what I really liked was that if your article was rejected by their editors, they told you why. This allows you the chance to become a better writer as well.

You'll get really good by writing 50 articles about it. By then you'll be an expert... the only way to learn anything is by doing a lot of it.

You will learn about the product/market by doing the research you'd need to do in order to write the articles. Once you've written a few articles, you will actually know about the product/market, so you could say you were knowledgeable about it.

When you would make the transition from "knowledgeable" to "expert" would depend on many factors; the (complexity of the) niche itself; how prolific you were; and, perhaps most importantly here, what your own definition of "expert" was.

However, unless I'm reading you wrong here, I don't think you were so much after the status of "expert", but rather, more interested in feeling you were at a level where you could feel comfortable writing about a given subject, almost seeking legitimacy; in that case, as I've said, the research you undertake for writing your articles would be sufficient in setting you on your way to reach the level you desire.

outsource or you can do all the hard work yourself

I like to think try for yourself and make sure you know what you want and know what is happening, and see results before you get someone else on board.

But once you outsource a whole new world of opportunities will open up to you.

Expert is an interesting word. We all started with no skill or knowledge at all whether it was in kindergarten or our first job.

Internet Business Mastery Jay and Sterling really hit the nail on the head. I was listening to their pod cast #76 (free on ITunes with no strings attached) and they discuss "expert" in realistic terms.

Study, research, reflection and realistic writing can lead any of us to be an expert in something - sticking with it long enough. Jay and Sterling said several times, they were not experts in internet marketing when they started but they learned. Soon they discovered they knew more than most others around.

Suddenly - they were experts. By the way, they have a whole series of fee pod casts on ITunes that are exceptional.

If you drop by my blog - I would appreciate any comment you might have and I will respond. I can also hook you up with some other free materials you might find useful.

Best of luck in your search - you are an expert in your own quest already!

    Cheers !

It's all about keywording and talking TO the person in the article and understand the target audience. You can write an article about "how to walk a dog" so many ways. I've done it for five years with private and online publications for decent money. I'm trying to move away from writing on whatever topics and start focusing on article marketing for myself or articles in my fields of interest.

To write an excellent article on any keyword, you will have to collect information by searching on internet, read magazines to find related articles. When you have enough material collected you will need to manage this information and write it in your own words to pass the copyscape test.

Have you ever had to write a research paper in high school or college? It is the same concept. As an article marketer you will actually become a bit of an expert on many subjects over time because of exactly what you are talking about. As long as you do your research and you write honest words that are your words, then you can market anything with articles.

Just don't steal someone else's words when you do your research. Always reword everything into your own unique words and you will be just fine.

This is what i do.... I search the niche, learn about it, find other sites and see what kind of information they provide, then i try to make my article better (I do my best).

Become an "expert" in the niche you are promoting, or want to promote and do your best to make your site, article better than your competitors.

    OR

And along with that, you have to be able to present the information in a compelling, easy-to-understand way.

All of the research or expertise in the world won't do you any good if you don't know how to write for people. Readers want to feel like you're talking to them (and only them) Great articles will make the reader feel like you're having a conversation with them - explaining even complex things in a way that makes sense.

Writing for the web is very, very different than writing those term papers back in high school. You don't need a ton of flowery prose or big fancy words to make your point.
