Building a brand and couldnt get the .com. Do you think I should still go ahead with the .org or the .net? I dont care for SEO purposes I just want to know that customers won't think less of a site that has a .org extension.

    I usually assume that a .org is an institution like the University of Phoenix. I personally would click on a .org before clicking on the same domain name that is .net

    I've done alright with a .net name if it pertains to anything technical. I also think of colleges when i see .org. I guess it really depends on what you use it for?

    It would be for a membership site. Do you think I should not go with it then? I have been trying to get the .com but a no go. Probably better to go for a different domain with the .com?

    i am more likely to click a .org as well if i'm looking for information. for a membership site though, i would try for a different .com.

      I don't think comsumers will, i think that the .org domain looks more professional or respectable, but it all depends on what you are using it for. if you are making a site for a college go for it lol if you are making a sales page not so sure....

    Personally, I would have gone with .net because I still think of .org in terms of "non-profit" organizations.

      I have a few .NETs, and have personally never thought less of a commercial site with a .NET extension. I'd rather click on a good domain name + .NET than click on a stupid domain name + .COM.

      Regarding .ORG, I agree with hwhite. I know many domainers and marketers use .ORGs, but because of the obvious connection to "organisation" I figure it's less desirable for a commercial site - not out of the question, but it wouldn't be my first choice.

      BTW, a few posters associate colleges and other educational institutions with .ORG, but wouldn't that be .EDU?

    I always think of .org as a non-profit. Actually, you could probably capitalize on that trust that it implies.

    The .org is would be a membership site for business. Do you guys still think I should get it? There are good arguments on both sides and now I am back to square one haha. The domain I seek is the one i want so maybe I should still just get the .org?

    Thanks to all

    actually .org has taken the place of .net for most part. Professionals likes .org more then .net as it gives them sort of an authority look. Lawyers seems to like .org over .net

    .net = network
    .org = organization

    On the other hand, some like .net over .org so I guess whatever goes.

    I've sold more .org's than .net's and .com's

      In my experience, the .com, .net or .org doesn't matter. Especially since Google just rolled out the Instant Preview function, the domain extension isn't going to matter much at all.

      I just wrote a blog about it here: Improve User Experience | Better PPC Campaign | Landing Page Design | Blue Riot Labs

      Now searchers will be able to see the landing page before clicking on the search result. If you have a .net and your landing page looks professional with professional content (Instant Preview also allows you to read a snippet of the website) and your competitor has a .com with poor graphics and spun content, the searcher will choose your site every time.

      Google is changing the game. And good for them. I'm glad they're finally cleaning up the net. Just my $.02.

    Thanks for the advice. Its just a hard decision since I have both .net and .org and I am trying to get the .com but I think the guy is asking for a lot of money.. So I guess its just one of those things you got to make a decision and stick with it

      I think that .org is very good domain extension and I don't think that average internet user really cares. Although the original purpose of .org was organisation or non-profit as someone mentioned above then nowadays it has lost its importance. There are many good authority sites on .org.

    I have a .org domain => my first website. And its performing well on search engines. If you are planning to start a membership site, then .com and .net are good, in my view.

    Order I would prefer
    1. .com
    2. .net
    3. .org

    So pretty much .org will not be a make or break of my business. As long as I provide true value and people see that, the .org should not matter. Am I correct?

    .org's get a better click rate than do .nets, or. worse still, .info's .info is the LAST thing you want to get, and .biz's are just as bad. I do not know what is up with all of these confusing domains. I always automatically think of a com, net, or org before anything else, but the net is the least of the three.
