Definition of an "access point"

Can anyone tell me what an "access point" is with regards to external links on one's website and provide some examples?

I've been searching for definitions and it seems that most of them are related to wireless technologies, which is not the context that I'm interested in. I'm more interested in the context of the term as it relates to marketing.

Thanks!

An access point is just an interaction point where a surfer gets to your business/website.

In normal business these get called touch points.

if you have an online business you may have a website, a blog, a facebook page, a twitter account, a squidoo lense etc.... These are all places where people can be introduce to your company and/or products. - access points to your business.

In the context of just a website then the destination of your incoming links would be the access point. In the case of PPC you want the access point for each advert to be different so that a) the person who sees the ad ends up on exactly the right page for that advert and b) so that you can track which adverts are working.

    Great thanks, Andy.

So, would a banner ad on my website (linking to a different website) count as an "access point"?

It would be an access point to someone else's business. Your banner on their website would be an access point to your business.

Why are you focusing on this term in particular?

      Great - that's exactly what I thought.

I needed confirmation of the usage/definition of the term because of a contract dispute.

      Thanks again.

In that case you should be speaking with a lawyer....
