Large traffic spike from Google.*/referral

For the past 3 days I've had an increase in traffic. I went from 10 hits pers day on a new site to over 40 and it keeps rising.

I'm not sure if I'm happy about it though because it's saying the traffic is coming from Google.*/referral (* is a wildcard. Substitute for any domain extension).

In my analytic I have hits from 32 Google search engines. Eg. google.com, google.com.mx, google.ca, google.in.

What does this mean?
#google or referral #large #spike #traffic
  • Hi,

Google referral just means that it is coming from Google but not from Adsense or general search terms, it means that it is coming from somewhere else than the search engine. These can be things like Google Groups or Google Base or any of the static pages created by Google users etc.

    google.com.mx is Google Mexico
    google.ca is Google Canada
    google.in is Google India

It just means that people are finding you through their local search engine for their own country.

    Hope this helps.

I can't understand how my site would end up on groups or static pages on every Google TLD. Here is a screenshot:

Are they coming from search queries or not? It seems a little strange. Most dont even stay on the site for 1 second (bots?) others, 6 minutes.

I may be wrong, but I've recently started getting some traffic like this and it correlates with the addition of images to my blog - could it be from Google Image search?

I have always been getting a lot of traffic from Google referrals but the thing is, I don't know if they convert.

Google handles 75% of the world's searches, so I don't think they're too worried about it. And besides, the OP is asking about Google specifically.

This has been going on for a LONG time now, though. A lot of people have posted about it, but the only answer Google ever gives is a short paragraph that is almost word-for-word what was given in post #2, which doesn't help to explain anything, really.

I would just be happy for the influx in traffic, because more people coming in means more sales. My best guess would be that it's probably just your site getting added to Google in the various countries.

Just an FYI, it's a very common thing for people to land on a website and only stay for a few seconds, in fact it's actually the norm unless the incoming traffic happens to be heavily targeted. That's why 'site stickiness' became so important to some webmasters.

Ok, but that still has absolutely nothing to do with the OP's question regarding his Google results. If you would like to start a new thread about Bing and it's plan of world dominance I, and many others I'm sure, would be more than happy to debate the issue.

Please understand I'm not trying to say your opinion isn't important, I'm just saying this thread isn't the place to debate the issue.

The only reason I can think is that your site got added into all the Google sites in all these countries

Probably your site is about something which concerns the whole planet ....someone such as Osama

BTW, The Porn facts were too good...cant support Microsoft though

                thanks

In fact, that's pretty much all society is going to consist of. According to statistics, 40% of visitors to porn sites are women.

And there's your real problem with Google. You hate porn. Great. Unfortunately, it has NOTHING to do with this thread. Again. Please stop clogging up this person's thread with your opinions about porn or I'll report you myself.

Exactly, he's way off topic and I'm also not sure what's he's on about. I just did a "suggestive" shall we say, search in Bing, no dirty words, no swear words, and the whole page returned results from porn sites.

                      *confused*
