Odd Google Experience, Need Thoughts!

My internet business controls and hosts hundreds of websites in a niche market, and has a link back to our website in a credit line at the bottom of every site's home page.

We wanted to better leverage the credit so we created a landing page, let's call it "keyword_term.html" which played up the term we were focusing on. We then revised about 60 credit lines on websites to include the keyword term and link to the landing page.

Legit white hat SEO stuff.

About a week later our Google listing for that term jumped from 7 to 1. For about FOUR HOURS. Then it insanely dropped back to 7.

I wrote it off to Google database hiccups, but it's been a week and still at 7. Don't believe Google choked on the 60 links and penalized us, we didn't drop, just reverted.

Any thoughts on what happened?

You're not going to settle into your rank for those links for at least a couple months. Google will put you up, take you down, and then put you up again. I'm not sure -why- this happens. It might be a data server thing or they might be evaluating your CTR. It's hard to say. Either way, that's normal. Don't expect to see a permanent increase in ranking for at least a month or two.

Google does this kind of thing all the time. Never look at day-to-day rankings because they simply won't make sense. Check in weekly or even monthly to track real changes in your ranking. That's what I do anyway - otherwise I'd go insane!
