Facebook / Twitter integration query

I have launched a new social network after 2 year build. I am now looking at ways to send the site viral and wanted your advice on Facebook / Twitter connect etc.

I have created a test account so you can check it out. Any tips on getting that "VIRAL" effect would be much appreciated and you will be invited onto the yacht when we sell out ;-)

  • What is your USP over someone like facebook.

Why would people go to your network over fb where they know their friends are already hanging out? I'm not trying to tell you it wont work, just trying to understand your angle a bit better so I might be able to help you more...

Whereas Facebook is a feed showing you what all your friends are up to, mixed with a few activities to do with your groups or pages, bongal is all about your interests. You click on channels down the left of the page and subchannels at the top of the feed to see recent content related to that channel. You can also click "whos talking" at the top of the feed in any channel to see all the other members who are talking about that topic.

It is basically a way to meet new people who share your interests in a really nice friendly environment. Does that make sense?

  • Gotcha, so it's more of a content driven network rather than a place to chat with friends.

    I like it!

I think your best bet is to try and get some people on board from various different forums (not just IM) so you have a fairly wide selection of people with varying interests to get things started. Once you have a good number of people on board you could start doing some paid advertising. The reason I suggest getting people on board before doing paid advertising is because people are more likely to come on board if there are more already there (social proof).

I'm sure some others will have more ideas for you as well. Maybe you can find something to offer people to get them on board as well...not sure what though because your site has quite a wide demographic.

Hope that helps to some extent!

    Have a great day

We have got to 25k members quite quickly but we need to look into Facebook connect and Twitter sharing. This is something I am a bit patchy on and where we need advice. Did you check out the site? Should we add sharing options to each discussion?

  • yeah I checked it out. I would definitely bve adding a facebook share and/or like button as well as tweet buttons. It might also be worth looking into getting the Google +1 thing on there as well. This should be a fairly simple integration for your tech guys as the facebook and twitter API's are quite simple to install. Although my only experience is wordpress really... I do feel that if it is so easy in WordPress is must be fairly easy for a software developer to get these things working.

Good luck with it all, I will have another look round your site once I get a bit more time on my hands.
