        Someone of the two copied the other one
        Because cbnet Ping Optimizer and MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer are the same ones.

            Yes, probably. It is a fork from the Max... plugin which requires optin for activation.
            The cb version (found on wordpress.org) removes the optin requirement. (Which I did long time ago on my own copy)

              Okay. So I compared the two plugins, and they ARE actually a replica of each other.

              Little snippet taken from Max:

              class PingOptimizerPlugin extends PingOptimizer
              {
              var = 0; // MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer option
              var = ''; // MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer pinging URLs
              var = array(); // List of future posts to be pinged
              var = ''; // Last updated time for future ping
              var = ''; // Holds the current date and time
              var = ""; // Title of the post
              var = ""; // Set if post is edited
              var = ""; // Set if post status changes from private to published
              var = 1000; // Maximum lines of log data to be stored
              var = 35; // Number of log rows to be displayed in options page
              var = 'mbp_ping_optimizer'; // Ping log table
              // Pinging action/type
              var = array(1 => 'none', 2 => 'new', 3 => 'future', 4 => 'forced', 5 => 'edited', 6 => 'disabled', 7 => 'noservices', 8 => 'excessive');
              And from cbnet:

              class cbnetPingOptimizer
              {
              var = 0; // cbnet Ping Optimizer option
              var = ''; // cbnet Ping Optimizer pinging URLs
              var = array(); // List of future posts to be pinged
              var = ''; // Last updated time for future ping
              var = ''; // Holds the current date and time
              var = ""; // Title of the post
              var = ""; // Set if post is edited
              var = ""; // Set if post status changes from private to published
              var = 1000; // Maximum lines of log data to be stored
              var = 35; // Number of log rows to be displayed in options page
              var = 'cbnetpo_ping_optimizer'; // Ping log table
              // Pinging action/type
              var = array(1 => 'none', 2 => 'new', 3 => 'future', 4 => 'forced', 5 => 'edited', 6 => 'disabled', 7 => 'noservices', 8 => 'excessive');
              Let's say one of them copied the work of the other, why isn't the latter taking any actions against the former?

        I know I know..I am going to seem like a total newb for asking this.

        Is "pinging" a website absolutely neccessary for SEO? I'm very curious.

    I personally use MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer.

    It lets you also avoid excessive pinging so you can setup how many pings at time you want and the time within they are made.

    Ultimate Plugins Smart Update Pinger

    "Replaces the built-in ping/notify functionality. Pings only when publishing new or future posts, not when editing. The new post's url is pinged, not the main url. Also includes reverse order logfile."

    It's just what I've always used.

      So little confused as Wordpress has Pingomatic built in what does the other plugins actually do ? And would they conflict with the builtin wordpress one ?

        Actually, the guy saying WP has "pingomatic built-in" was wrong...

        The correct statement is: WP has the pinging feature built-in AND any default installation will ping Pingomatic, which is an aggregate pinging site and will send your ping to many, many sites - practically, no need to add anything else there.

        On the other hand, WP pings pingomatic (or whatever sites you ping) every time you edit/update a post... and if you make multiple typos and correct them only after publisihing the post, WP will ping every time.

        The two identical plugins (except the optin requirement) let you ping only once; no pings when editing...

    It would be nice to read the plugins's page on WP before asking rhetorical questions :p

    Activation/subscription-free fork of MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer plugin
    Source: WordPress › cbnet Ping Optimizer « WordPress Plugins

    The story:
    The Max... plugin used to be on the WP/extend repository, which means it had to be released under GPL.
    Due to complaints about the sign-up requirement, they removed it.

    Being GPL... anybody can take the code and "fork" their own version, make a better version etc.

      Alright, I missed that line.

      But, I couldn't resist., but ask.

      If the Max plugin is removed from the WP repository, then the GPL licensing also became void, I guess (I'm not really into legal stuff at all.)

      Moreover, http://www.maxblogpress.com/plugins/mpo/;

      This plugin is released as Reviewware. That means you can download and use it for free and if you find it useful then we'll appreciate a review post for this plugin in your blog.
      So, isn't cbnet NOW violating the license?

        Maybe not. I didn't download the cbnet plugin... however, I looked into my hard drive and discovered several copies of the plugin, from 2007, 2008, 2009... (different versions) from the time when it still was on the WP site.

        If the cbnet creator also worked from such a copy - he doesn't violate anything.

        Here is the text copied from the top of the plugin file:

      I love the wordpress ping optimizer. I dropped over 500,000 spots in 4 days when I had to deactivate the plug in. I did the update and it started having a reader error for my html in the header area. It's been 2 weeks now I have managed to lose 2 million spots. I am new to SEO but to lose that many spots for something is crazy!
