WP site: Added Plugins &Changed permalinks

A couple of days ago, a warrior member listed his 5 favorite WP plugins that he uses for SEO. I am fairly new to the WP (4 months) and IM (8 months) thing, I had yet to install any plugins. I went a head and downloaded all of the suggestions, as I am sure that Warrior knows more than I do.

Since these changes I have had an increase in visitors over all, but my actual money pages that were seeing the most traffic have dropped off the first and second page of google and are now getting no clicks!

After the instal, I ran the WP SEO install by Yoast (as well as the others). Yoast told me that I need to change my permalinks from only "post ID" to something with "post name" in it. I wanted to do this from the start, but did not know the codes, so it thought it was not available.

So I changed the Permalinks. It took some work as I had to change my .htaccess, but then only my pages worked. So I was told I needed to add a mod_rewritel. I hope I did this all right. My web host helped me with the .htaccess problem, but I had to figure out the mod_rewrite issue on my own. I tried several things and finally found small bit of code that I added on the same page as the .htaccess, and the posts now work.

I know this is a lot of information, but if anybody has any suggestion, please let me know. I am contemplating uninstalling the plugins, but maybe it will just take a few days to get my pages ranking well once again.

Thanks for the help: Chris

My personal opinion, is that you learn about SEO and not rely on a plug-in to do the work for you.

Something that I am not seeing in your post is a reference to google webmaster tools. Do you have a webmaster tools account? If not, get one. If you do, have you looked at it lately?

It appears to me that your just shooting in the dark hoping to hit something. That is not the way it works.

Find the blog of Matt Cutts and read it, read through the google webmaster guidelines, and study your google webmaster tools account. Take the time to educate yourself about SEO and go from there.

Your probably going to get a lot of replies that says "such and such" is great on SEO.

Here are the facts - Unless is comes straight from the either the google webmaster guidelines or Matt Cutts, take all advice with a grain of salt.

Thanks for the reply. I have been learning a lot about SEO, but thought these plugins sounded like they would not hurt my efforts, and maybe they will help out in the long run. From what I have seen is that SEO is mostly straight forward, and think I am doing a fairly good job with my lack of experience.

About the webmaster tools, I do not have them figured out quite yet but have messed with them. I will look into it today, as well as Matt Cutts Blog. I put the code into the Yoast Plugin, but I do not know if that does much.

So, do you think I should uninstall the plugins, or give them some time?

Personally, I do not run a single SEO plug-in on my site; all of my SEO is done by hand.

If you want to give the pug-ins some time, then by all means do so.

But either way, read through the google wemaster guidelines, and read through the blog of matt cutts. Google even has a webmaster channel on youtube where you can watch videos. The people at google have provided you the tools to improve your site. Just take the time to review that information.

    Don't bet on that...

Most people install plugins for the sake of installing plugins and have no idea what the consequences might be. They are also dumb enough to install 3-4 plugins that will do the same; i.e. adding the same features... and they they are shocked when the plugins annihilate each other's positive effect.

The stupidest threads are the "my favourite 100 plugins"

Don't bother reading those lists. Install only and only what is necessary for YOUR blog - which might need completely different things than theirs.

Good suggestion. I have also seen here a lot of euphoric threads regarding "plugins you should use". I dont even understand why they post such threads.

Many here think plugins would increase their bank account, but the truth is that it is the CONTENT of your blog which matters, and not how many plugins you use.
