Question on Press Releases

Big doosie of a question here:

(ok, so maybe it's not all that big of a question...but....)

If one has a product related to a big event but is not associated with the event itself...

1. Does it make sense to send out a marketing press release the day BEFORE the event in order to sort of preempt it?

2. Should one send out the press release the day OF the event to join in its wave of publicity?

3. Should one send out the press release AFTER the event since public awareness will now be at least somewhat greater than it was before due to the event's OWN press releases?

Advice from seasoned warriors please!

It's hard to be more definite without really knowing the details of the situation, but I would say send early in the week of the event and maybe also one after. A lot of times people lose interest the moment it's done so that really depends on the event you're talking about.

If I had to choose just one though--early in the week of the event.

One note though--if you're using free press release sites, realize that some of them can take 2 days or so to approve and distribute your release.

Your press release is really riding on the back of a big event so organizing your PR a few days before and a few days after seems to me to be the way to go.

As Tracy said though, you need to be aware of how long the PR sites you submit to will take to get your press release out. How you put the release together is also very important as you want it to stand out.

I have a free report - Press Release On Steroids which gives you the complete low down on how to write a killer press release together with 25 free press release sites that you can submit to.

Yes I do a PR for clients in the week leading up to the event and then one a day or two later to reinforce the message.

One strong technique is to treat the press releases as a launch sequence. Send out one 3 days to a week before announcing what you're going to do, send out one the morning of, and a final one announcing the results of the event/product release/whatever.

To answer your question directly, send your press release out at 3am the morning of. This is for East Coasters who have early deadlines. Tues/Wed/Thur are the strongest days by default.

I'm assuming here you're in the US.
