Pre-testing Your Product Before Launch

I'm curious what methods people use to pre-test their sites and products before launch. While I'm about to embark on my first info product launch, I've successfully launched websites before both for my own internet marketing needs as well as for a major beer brand while doing interactive strategy at Digitas.

The methods I utilized there and in my own work included sending out emails to a sample of our list to gauge response and tweak messaging all the way up to a silent soft launch that employed pop-up surveys to gauge interest.

Of course, all of your testing needs to be unique to the product but I thought this might be an interesting discussion to have.

Some pertinent questions that come to mind...

  • Have you ever called off a product launch due to poor testing results?
  • What was the most drastic thing you changed about a product due to testing results?
  • What methods do you currently employ when testing products? (Obviously we might need to keep this one pretty generalized)
While I hope everybody can find this thread useful, I'm particularly interested in those who test products that sell on clickbank. How do you go about testing them up to and including testing different price points when you are trying to attract affiliates?

Anyway, I hope people can add some useful anecdotes here...I find myself to be a by-the-numbers guy and it amazes me sometimes when I'm presented with testing data that just does NOT make sense and then I suddenly determine the cause of it.

I have always used PPC for testing. I will send a few hundred people to my sales page to see how well it converts. Then, I might tweak it and then send some more people over to it to make sure my changes worked well.

I do this before recruiting affiliates or launching my site to the public. This way I can also tell my affiliates how well the sales page converts also!

Try PPC and article marketing to see what the conversions are like.

Someone else had a similar question and here's what I offered to them:

I'm no guru and don't do big launches, but I did test a product for viability with an Adwords campaign.

When people clicked the ADD TO CART button, I took them to a page where they found out we were "Out of stock" but they could join an Aweber list to be notified when the product was "In Stock." I offered to give them a coupon for 50% off if they joined the list.

Worked like a champ. About half the people joined.

P.S. At the same time, I was using Google's multivariate testing feature and I discovered the best price for the product out of 12 different prices.

Thanks for this tidbit. I actually just stumbled across your original post (odd that I didn't find it when I searched on this topic...maybe I had a typo). In 4 hr Work Week, Ferris mentions that pretending to offer a product for sale that you are not actually selling yet is actually illegal in some places, but this might be a low risk way of getting around that. Although in my situation it would not be out of stock, but rather, there would be a problem with processing and they would just not receive a product (nor would they be charged) and I'd collect their email to notify them once the site is fixed.
