My monthly cost of operation is estimated to be at $4,000 a month (most of it to build a database). If the site is receiving 15,000 monthly hits, then would two big image banners from AdSense (one horizontal, and the other vertical) cover my overhead? I understand there is no definite answer, but would a website with that much traffic generally generate $4,000 monthly? If not, then approximately how much traffic would?

The site is city-based, similar to Yelp. The content consists of listings and reviews, with lots of user interaction.

Please spare me a few minutes, thanks for your time!

Typically adsense sites that make money are specifically designed to be adsense sites and they are becoming less and less effective. Personally, I think adsense is a horrible deal. I spend a lot of time and/or money getting traffic to my sites. A link on any of my sites is worth more to me than a 10-25 cent bribe to entice customers to leave my site.

A better idea is a good offer to subscribe to your newsletter.....I don't provide too many escape hatches to leave my sites without opting in.

Although I am sure there are a few marketers making thousands in adsense revenue, I highly doubt that kind of adsense income can come from just one website.

    Hi,

I doubt it. If you want to make more money, get independent bloggers/webmasters to buy banner space form you. That is much more lucrative.

I highly doubt it, ideally you would find better paying affiliate banners and text links, some say adsense just pays the hosting cost, I would not be surprised to hear about someone making $100 in adsense for 45,000 visitors, it depends a lot of the site and subject matter.

The squarish adsense block (around 240x300) supposedly does well

I would expect more traffic for that much of an investment. BTW some of the bigger ad networks require a site to get 500,000 visitors to qualify to show their ads.

You can't estimate website earning based on that.

Your design cost and build up are just a beginning. Covering your investment cost will relay on how much you will invest on both SEO and Advertising and how much number of visitors are you able to attract to your website on monthly basis

Well, that was a huge amount of monthly debt to have taken on without first thinking about how you were going to monetize it.

I doubt adsense will cover that unless you have one of the really high PPC terms. There is no way to even estimate it because the PPC rates vary so much from keyword to keyword.

It sounds like you are mostly bringing people there for free stuff, which will reduce the amount of clickthroughs you will get. That will be a problem. Unless you have highly targeted traffic looking to buy what you are advertising you probably won't get a lot of people clicking. Ideally you will want something targeted toward your niche, and that pays well. Research the adwords costs for the niches keywords. That will give you a general idea of what the adsense payout might be...some fraction of it. If it is too low, you will probably want to look for some affiliate products to use along with adsense. It's also hard to say without knowing the niche, but text adds work better than banners in many niches. You may have to experiment a bit and see what works best.

The revenue from Adsense will definitely not be enough to cover your expenses. You should go for a different plan on how to monetize it.

The only way to know is to test it, but in my experience 15,000 monthly hits is not enough to generate the kind of money you mention from AdSense.

To earn thousands per month from AdSense you would need to get hits in the 100's of thousands per month.

Here is a quick and dirty estimate:

If your site got 100,000 hits per month
    Your CTR were 3%
Your average earning per click were $1.00

    You would earn $3,000.00/Month

Now, don't take this as an accurate estimate. Your site's CTR can be more or less than 3% and the earnings per click depends on the value of your keywords and the quality of your visitors just to mention a few variables.

Ultimately though, you will have to test it yourself.
