UK Hosting Or US? Does it Really Matter?

Hey Guy's I need some advice on hosting.

I'm in the US and I'm very happy with my Hostgator reseller account.
My daughter lives in the UK and has asked me to setup a website for her, but she got her domain and hosting account before I could give her any advice.

Consequently she has purchased from a friend of a friend and ended up with Plesk instead of cPanel.... I had never had any dealings with Plesk but did manage to get WP installed.

The problem now is I can't upload any images using the WP media without getting error messages. I've researched this online but so far not found a solution.

I'm ready to get her to ditch her hosting acocunt and I'll pay for a new one if I have to rather than constantly have tech problems with Plesk.

So my question is this......
Does she really need a hosting company based in the UK to run a small website to advertise her business or would Hostgator work ?

If you think she needs a UK hosting company then can any UK forum members recommend a reliable one that has cPanel ?

Thanks,

Steve

I don't think it matters if you host in the US using Hostgator. I use them for UK-biased site and I am very happy with them.

I can only say that according to Google Webmaster Tools the location of the server does indeed have a little bit of influcence on local rankings if it's a com/net/org domain:

If no information is entered in Webmaster Tools, we'll rely largely on the site's country domain (.ca, .de, etc.). If an international domain (.com, .org, .eu, etc) has been used, we'll rely on several signals, including IP address, location information on the page, links to the page, and any relevant information from Google Places. If you change hosting provider for a country domain, there should be no impact. If you change the hosting provider of an international domain to a provider in another country, we recommend using Webmaster Tools to tell us which country your site should be associated with.
However, you can always tell Google in their Webmaster Tools that you are targeting users in the UK I suppose.

  • For SEO purposes, yes, local server > local traffic does matter. Not so much I would consider moving an established site but if you're just starting out and struggling then it may be worthwhile.

In terms of a good web host with Cpanel - TSOHost are awesome. If you want confirmation from other UK residents, I think a google of OC Host Review will show they are number one as voted for by the majority of ppl at overclockers.co.uk forum.

I use them personally and they rock. Ping them an email with any Q's and you will be blown away by how quick they reply - honestly I have servers costing me £200+ a month and the ticket resolution time is worse than TSO Host (which I am on the £19.99 cloud package).

    Hope that helps

    Chris
