Noobish Question re: Article Marketing

I understand it is important to keep the content on my site different from what I submit to article directories.

I also understand that webmasters use content from directories to populate their own sites.

But I also understand that duplicate content isn't as valuable.

So why would webmasters even want to use content from directories on their sites to help them get rankings? How does that help them if duplicate content doesn't have much value?

I'm a little confused about that.

Thanks.

I have been doing article marketing for ten years.

I have zero reservations about putting articles on my site first or someone else's site first.

I also have no concerns about only putting original content on my site or someone else's site.

I don't have any problem with article directories, although I would prefer to put my content on authority websites and newsletters... Just a preference mind you.

I also have no problem putting other people's content on my sites with their links intact.

    Maybe it is just me...

But I feel so long as I am giving real value to my readers, everything will work out for me positively in the end.

I always get my articles indexed first on my site, just to be safe
Then I post the same article to the article directories. If syndication occurs, other webmasters will publish my articles while keeping my links.

And no, it isn't duplicate content, and it is just as valuable as original content, of course taking in account that you have other unique content throughout your site.

Google gives credit to the first instance of a set of content. Populating content on a site from article directories in which tons of other people are using the same content is garbage and in fact you site could get penalized for it i.e. the Google Panda algo update. Search "Google Panda Update" on google and you'll learn all you need to know about the subject.

So to answer your question why would webmasters use this content, in short they are stuck trying to implement a strategy that is so 3 years ago.

Another important note, just because your website isn't delisted by Google doesn't mean it isn't being penalized.

Because some webmasters are concerned, first and foremost, with providing a worthwhile experience for their visitors. To that end, relevance and quality have been known to trump originality.

It's a big, wide internet world out there. Not everything is about SEO.

Syndication is the fundamental purpose of submitting articles to directories such as Ezine Articles. Syndication provides you with the opportunity to draw in new visitors to your website.

You should definitely publish all your articles on your own website first, wait until they have been indexed by Google, and then move forward to publish them in article directories.

You are clearly confused about the "duplicate content" myth. This post from my own blog should help you to better understand.

It seems that SEO is having less and less impact in the SERPs and the quality of the experience for the reader is everything. The reader does not know or care which article was indexed first.

If you were your reader, would you like to see the same article that you have just seen in an article directory on the site that is supposed to be the authority? That is the difference between syndication and duplication.

Keep your site fresh and unique, but use your feeder articles properly by allowing them to be syndicated via directories and social bookmarking sites, don't just article spam directories with half spun content.
