Joint Venture or Affiliate Program? Which is best?

One of my Twitter friends has almost 1 million targeted followers! I wrote an ebook that would be perfect his audience.

Would it be more of an advantage to write a simple jv contract, let him promote the product to his list, and split the profits with him? Or, should I set up some kind of affiliate program, and let him and others promote it?

I can see the advantage of setting up an affiliate program. But, I can also see an advantage to creating a single relationship that we can build on in the future.

Suggestions?

    Do both!

... that is, without a doubt go ahead with establishing a JV with your friend with 1 million followers. Market the book to them as soon as possible.

But, also concentrate on building a solid, long-term system that will create a passive income for you (ie. an affiliate system).

There's nothing to stop you doing both but not necessarily at the same time.

If you're friend is willing to promote your product to his list, you could go with that option first. After he's sent out a few emails, you'll probably start to see the sales begin to tail off as the buyers get fewer. His list will start to go cold since anyone who is interested in buying will have already bought.

When that happens you can start looking for other affiliates to promote your product.

I do like the idea of doing the JV first.

Any ideas for writing a simple contract, and doing the payments?

I've never done a JV, so in my head the arrangement could be as simple as an email stating intent, and a PayPal account. I could just show him the sales stats, and send his percentage of the money.

I think Pay Dot Com has sample contracts that you can adapt to your product. I'm not certain, it's been a long time since I was in that system but it could be worth checking out.

Just checked Pay Dot Com, and the domain is parked. I Googled "sample joint venture agreements" and got some ideas for writing a contract.

      Just food for thought...
I assume you're saying that a JV partner is much more than just a glorified affiliate, and that they deserve at least the option of a continuing share of the net profits.

I should mention that the information in my ebook is time sensitive. It may have no shelf life after about 6 months. And, my plans don't really include doing another edition. So, unless there is affiliate traction within the first few months, I may be best just doing the JV, then moving on to the next thing.

      I'm just thinking out loud.

setup an affiliate program and get your friend to signup within it to promote your product. However if you wish you can setup a different campaign for him to give him higher percentage as he will work as your JV than the rest of your affiliates.

If you are doing JV and as the followers list is huge I would rather advise you to drive traffic to your squeeze page and build a list. Then setup a different follow up email campaign just for your friend with his affiliate links in the emails and then promote your ebook from there.

Also you can hunt for other affiliate products or even look into creating more products to make money from your list and build relationship with them. To make your JV more stronger I would advise you to create a product funnel down the line and offer a percentage of sale to him for every product in the funnel. He will be more than happy to promote your squeeze page forever to all his future followers too.

    It depends really....

If you already have build relationships with others in your niche. You are more likely to be able to get a joint venture deal. Another important thing with joint ventures is that you would need to know how much of a list they have. They will tend to have a more responsive list then affiliate marketers because they continually stay in contact with their list.

Therefore, JV's is a great way to get more buyers if there list is responsive, but in order to get there you will need to build up relationships with the people you plan to approach.

As for affiliate programs, its a great way to get extra sales coming in. Get yourself setup

    Hope this helps.
