Until the end of October? They told me the end of September..maybe they just wanted me to buy quicker.

I purchased through them two days ago. Here's a short review:

Friendly service. Took 24 hours to register the domain. Logged in and very disappointed that I don't have access to MX records. I can change the nameservers but theres no option for MX servers. I called technical support and they said I have to wait another 24 hours because I switched my namesevers.

The option wasn't available even before I changed any settings. So I'm not sure about that one but hopefully they're right.

Also, my Paypal transaction is for $6 but it's still pending. The sales rep said there would be no additional charges. So hopefully when the transaction is completed it will go down to 99 cents.

I have had personal experiences, along with my brother, with 1and1 that causes me to always dissuade people from using their "services" especially when the domain they are registering is important to them. Trying to transfer out a domain from 1and1 is a nightmare and many a domain has been lost by my brother and others I know personally. Frankly they just don't want to let you go...

Buyer beware even at 99 cent s a domain....you get what you pay for, in my case it was headaches...

      Cheers!

i ususally find these deals 99cent, but when you get to the final part of checkout its only if you take out another service which costs for example $9

.99 cent for .com? And they charged $6 for it?

Interesting... Let's see how 1and1 handle this.

Do you also need to get web hosting or you can just register the domain for 99c?

Yesterday I registered one, let me explain all that went down

I got access to the domain within 20 mins, and I changed dns within 5, I have yet to be billed an entire day later...

I contacted them asking them today why I haven't been billed yet(my guess is because they're off on the weekends...yeah i'm not joking) how long I had to have the domain, if there was any catch, how I could turn off auto renewal(it's on by default for all accounts) since the control panel is HORRIBLE and bare bones. Their response was there is no catch, you don't need to have the domain for any certain period of time, you don't need to buy hosting, and whois privacy is free as long as you don't transfer the domain. As far as auto renewal goes, you can't turn it off from your control panel... you either have to call them or try and disable it at cancel.1and1.com (btw is too is very confusing to use and most likely won't work, read below)

Here's where you should be concerned, if the above didn't startle you, on their private customer forums, you literally have 100's of people complaining, i'm talking hardcore I can't stand 1&1 pissed off customers who've been there for years not holding anything back in their posts. The fact all these posts exist and 1&1 staff never read nor address any of them is a big red flag. Apparently 1&1 will bill you forever, even if you try and cancel, at which time they'll send a bill collection agency after you(which they own) and threaten to ruin your credit. They also apparently can delete your account at any time and free your domain(it's in their TOS) for absolutely no reason. Their hosting is very flacky and sites can go down for days/weels, especially if it's a weekend since they're off... Transferring domains can take weeks or just never happen, I emailed them 3 times and only 1 actually answered any of my questions, the rest kinda just bs'd me and made no sense. If you want to contact a supervisor, you can't, there isn't one, and apparently they're very rude on the phone. It's so bad people on the forum, trapped in their contract, feel hopeless and are desperately trying to leave. Others recommend you buy a prepaid debit and only use that to purchase stuff from them. Also as far as whois privacy goes, if anyone sends you mail apparently they charge you $5...it's in the TOS somewhere and the extent of that i'm not sure, think they filter spam but again, you'd have to look more into it.

Transferring domains can take weeks or just never happen, Yes True this happened to me a couple times and a half dozen times to my brother..

I was thinking of buying a few .com's from 1and1 but after seeing this thread I now have to thing twice about their service. Can some one say they have had a good experience with 1and1?

Yes, I can. I currently have 10 domains registered with them. I agree their admin management panel definitely takes a bit of getting used to, but once you do get the hang of it, it's no problem.

I've never had an issue with what they have charged me, and by going to cancel.1and1.com it's a simple procedure to turn off the auto renew.

I agree you need to take ten steps where elsewhere one of two would suffice, but once it's done, it's done and a 99c dot com is hard to beat.

BTW, I also have domains registered with other companies - I just go where the bargains are, but never, ever use any of them for hosting!

It's kind of hard to imagine they are so bad, and still in business. 99 cents is tempting, but it if they keep billing after you cancel, not sure it's worth it.

I made the 1 & 1 mistake back in 2004, I was lured by their attractive prices as previously I had purchased domains in the 90's at Network Solutions (the only game in town then) for 35 dollars a year with a 2-year minimum.

Looking back I truly feel that selecting 1 & 1 as a registrar was one of the dumbest business moves I have ever made in my life. Seriously.

I ended up abandoning most of the domains, tried to transfer them but encountered the same roadblocks that everyone else has reported. A couple of them were ones I really wanted but had to resign myself to waiting for them to release them so I could buy them back from an actual legitimate registrar.

If you are thinking about gong for that 99 cent "deal" I would strongly advise against it. In the great scheme of things there is not a large difference between paying 1 dollar or 10 dollars for your domain name, especially if you develop a useful web property with it. Spend the extra few dollars and go with a reputable domain registrar.

The money you save on Tylenol will make it more than worth the extra cost!

Anyone tempted by 1&1 low price of a domain, just Google 1&1 scam. There are so many unhappy customers that it wouldn't be worth it to me to save a few bucks.

I bet that promotion killed them. I know it would have killed me. I do throw up some nice promos but nothing that great. I just give QUALITY service that I would expect myself.

So it's 4 days after I purchased the domain and the charge still hasn't gone down from $6. I just called customer service and they said it's only an authorization charge and it will go down to .99. They couldn't say when though.

I never had an authorization charge last more than 24 hours.

Also, if I ever 'want' to buy another domain through 1and1, I'd still have to do the $6 authorization! I don't understand that, once it's authorized they should know it's a legitimate credit card.

Also, the 24 hours passed as I still cant change my MX records. I guess I'm used to GoDaddy's MX records because it's so easy to change. Apparently 1and1 doesn't have that option though. I looked it up online and other users have found ways to work around it, such as creating two sub-domains and setting each name server to a different destination. Sounds like a lot of work for something that should be so simple!

I say stay away from them. I really hope I'll be able to transfer this domain because it's very valuable in my local market.

I almost bought the domain but half way through I cancelled my order. I wouldn't want the extra hassles for the greed of saving a few dollars. I would better use it to buy from renowned registrars.

I bought some domains on 1and1 a few years and when I found out how poor their services were I switched the domains over to Godaddy. Not opposed to buying domains there again, but I would not keep them there.

      1&1 Webhosting FAQ | How do I disable/enable auto-renew for a domain?

I registered a new domain (no hosting), transferred DNS to Hostgator, installed a new WP site on Hostgator and canceled the domain registration auto-renew, all in less than an hour. Around month 11, I'll transfer the registration to Namecheap, where I normally get all my domains. Their renewal price is pretty much the same as Namecheap but it's easier to manage them in one location. I always pay with a credit card so in a worse case, a call to the cc company will cancel it regardless. Hasn't failed me yet. And like AnniePot says above, never host a domain at the same location that you registered it.

If what you say is true that is a pretty amazing offer.

(That is if you don't have to pay too much when you renew).

I ordered a domain from them 4 days ago. No charge has been made in my Paypal account up to now. They've just sent me an invoice for $ 0.99 with indications that renewals will be $ 9.99 annually.

They have indicated in the invoice that the money will be deducted from my Paypal within 7 days.

I am confused as to why this simple process has to take so long to be completed while other registrars do it so fast.

Meanwhile, the domain is apparently ready for use according to their settings. Am however waiting for the charge to go through before setting up the website. You never know what they are planning!

Looking at this...I can say the following...don't be cheap when you are investing on something. How is possible, 1&1 to offer so good prices for a domain. I think here always is a catch! I was used to buy domains from GoDaddy but now my preferred one is Namecheap. They area really good!
