Wordpress: RSS and Pinging

Hey guys, Jonathon Locke here. Quick question, I'm a bit confused with all of this RSS and pinging stuff.

I've purchased RSSbot, and would like to use it in a couple of experimental blogs I'm creating using Wordpress.

I'm going to be using WP-O-Matic to load up pre-written blog posts for 45 days or so, and I'm wondering how the RSS feed and pinging works. Here's my understanding, please shed some light on my erroneous thinking:

- I create the blog with the automated content loaded up and scheduled to post every day.

- I then use RSSbot to submit to every service listed within RSSbot (I'm a bit confused here - should I submit to the ping services as well?)

- Then, supposedly, Wordpress should automatically ping services every time a new post is uploaded by WP-O-Matic.

Now, do I need to add all of the services in RSSbot to the wordpress ping list? By default, Wordpress only pings "pingomatic" - does this do everything I need it to?

Also, why am I submitting my RSS feed to directories that are for "pinging" (in RSSbot)?

Thanks guys, I really appreciate the help!

All the best,
Jonathon Locke

First off, I'm not sure you have got the hang of what WP-O-Matic is for. This plugin is for automatically creating posts from RSS feeds.

You can load up all your prewritten posts and use the scheduler right within WordPress to schedule those posts to appear at some point in the future. Or there are some plugins available in the WSO section I believe for drip feeding articles to a WordPress blog.

Ah. Well that's a huge help, right off the bat . I would have figured that out I suppose, but I might have been very confused for an hour or so... . Ok, well pretend I'm going to be using the auto-scheduler within Wordpress, not WP-o-Matic. Any thoughts on the RSS side of it?

    Thanks for the response!

Whenever you make a post on Wordpress it will ping the preloaded ping sites automatically. WP is preloaded with just the one, but you can add more. WP will ping the loaded site no matter if you make the post or if it is generated automatically with WP-O-Matic.

(If using an auto-poster I would install MaxPingOptimizer so you don't ping the site 20 times in 10 minutes if WP-O-Matic posts that many article for you.)

RSSBot is something you really only need to do once per site (the way I was explained it) as it takes the RSS feed from your site and submits it to RSS directories. Once it is in the directory it will stay there and update as your site updates.

Thanks for the reply - so does this mean that I should upload the list of sites RSSbot submits to into the wordpress ping list (including the RSSbot ping directories?) I'm just curious if pingomatic (the wordpress default) already pings the other directories... if so, I'm in danger of getting banned for pinging multiple times. Thanks for the tip on Maxpingoptimizer, it was already on my list of possible plug-ins with an asterisk - now I'll definitely use it. Thanks again!

      Hi Jonathan,

Pingomatic is a service that will ping a bunch of other services. You can see them all here:

      Ping-o-Matic!

Some folks feel that's enough, others seem to like to ping a whole lot more. Yes, you do have to be careful about overpinging, which is why MaxBlogPress Ping Optimizer, as mentioned earlier, is so valuable - and in my opinion, indispensable.

      Hi Jonathon,
The list of sites RSSbot submits to are called RSS aggregators (directories). This is completely different than pinging and ping services. They have nothing to do with each other. The two things you are doing for your blog are:
      a) Publishing your RSS feed to major aggregators for backlink exposure and increased traffic
      b) Pinging ping services to let them know you updated your blog (and other sites such as blog directories and search engines will be notified via the pinging)

Just remember - pinging and RSS feeds are two very different things and do not have anything to do with each other. Hope that helps!

Actually, if you look down the list of sites in RSSBot you will see that there are some ping only services included (Pingomatic is in there for instance).

However, I wouldn't let that worry you. When you use RSSBot you are only pinging those services once, at the time you are running it. You can also edit your profile in RSSBot so that you do not submit to the ping services if you don't want to.

There's a line in the RSSBot manual that seems relevant:
You can Ping these services as frequently as needed without repercussion. However, continually Pinging them needlessly without providing fresh content may result in them blocking your sites altogether.
What that means is that as long as you are providing fresh content each time you ping, then they will be ok with that. I think that's debateable and another reason you should use MaxBlogPress to control the pinging.

Note you will need to enable that feature in the plugin settings, it doesn't do it by default. The default behaviour is to just stop the blog pinging when you edit a post.

Also a heads up, there is a thread on the support forum for MaxBlogPress where people are finding that it actually does not ping at all when a future date stamped post gets published. Seems pretty relevant here given what you intend doing.

Thanks for the great post Tim - since apparently Ping Optimizer doesn't ping future-stamped posts when they get published, is there any plug-in that will? I just need Wordpress to automatically ping the services each time a new post is published. It's my understanding that if I just use Wordpress's ping feature, it will ping the services when I actually create the future-stamped posts, not when they publish?

Thanks for all of the help guys!
