Do I try and sell products on my "list building" sites

This may be a weird question buy I'll ask anyways.

I'm trying to build my "list"....

So...do i only offer a free product (ebook, report, etc) which entices people to give me there email address...

or....

Can I also try to sell products on the same site.....

I only ask this because...I was taught years ago...you NEVER "mix and match" business models....you keep your potential customers focused on one think at a time... You don't sell to them while trying to get their email address...

make sense???

Don't sell on your site. Get the optins and send them a series of trust responders, then sell at some point to those on your list.

What I find to work best is to just use the squeeze page for a free product, then use email marketing to create sales.

You could direct them to a page that does have a paid offer on it after they opted in to your list with a "No Thanks I just want my free download" link on the page. I tend to stay away from that, but it is an option.

Build a relation with the list, continue to provide them with free valuable content, sprinkle in a paid offer to them every 3rd mailing or so. The key is to build a relation with your list if you go this route.

I have seen people selling products on their list building websites, and it may work, but for the purpose of building a list I would just offer some free products. Once you get that opt-in, and give them some trustworthy information, then try to sell them products.

I don't think you should put any selling on the opt in page. It's 2 different directions you are trying to go with your visitors. Sure, you may get a sale or two but you will lose many opt ins...

I always do man - if nothing else, to recover my advertising costs so it's like I build my list for free. This can be accomplished by an offer wall monetization technique. Keep the users interested on your free eBook or whatever (so they double optin) but also below that or somewhere else on the page include you some other links that go out to CPA offers. Other lead gens, credit card offers (trials/CPS), etc. are always great to makeup those advertising costs.

While, in principle, I agree with most of the replies here, "Don't combine selling and list building", I have experienced some successes doing just the opposite.

A couple of my WP sites are mainly for blogging in the IM field. Of course they have an opt-in to collect readers names to my lists.

However, there are a couple of ad panels for web hosting and domain name vendors, and a couple of AdSense and Amazon widgets.

I find that I get fairly regular commissions from these (at $60 a time), and still seem to get subscribers via the opt-in panel.

I guess I'm not exactly directly 'selling' on these sites. If I were, I would go along with the majority - Don't Mix and Match.
      Cheers
