I know thread bumping is frowned upon.

How old of a post can you respond to, without it being considered thread bumping?

I just use the "New Posts" button at the top of the forums. If it's on there, I'll at least look at it when the name of the thread/mouseover is something that sparks my interest.

If you are bumping it just for fun then yeah, you probably shouldnt.. but if it's for a legit response or something like that, I don't see a problem with it.

I'm an admin on a gaming forum too btw, and I leave it to their best judgment. Usually works out pretty well too. Sure you have the occasional spammer but that will come with any forum.

It depends. If you were someone who genuinely searched the forums for an answer to a problem and came across an old thread that you wanted to respond to, I don't see the harm in doing so. It's when people do this intentionally by searching for threads closely related to the signature they are advertising, and then posting in those threads to bring them back to life and get eyeballs on their signature. This is very obvious when it happens and most people are caught out very quickly... and dealt with.

If you dig up an old thread and want to ask another question, you are probably best off just posting a new thread anyway. Makes more sense and will get you a fresh perspective on things.

if you add value or ask a thoughtful question then it wont be frowned upon. unless you seem to be doing for the purposes of promoting your sig.

If you have information relevant to the thread - and it's still timely - that's not a problem. Most don't but just hope to post somewhere people won't notice they have a link to post or nothing to say.

Clearly, if someone is posting "I'm in a crisis - I'm broke" or "my girlfriend doesn't listen" and it was posted a year ago...the problem is probably solved by now one way or another.

I think I understand the rules on thread bumping ...

BUT - I find that the Main IM Discussion Forum is so busy these days, that sometimes the threads are only on the front page for a very short while, and there's a danget of mssing something meaty if you don'i prowl through the following pages.

Yeaterday I noticed that one post I wrote dropped down to 12th place within seconds of submitting it. It had slid down to page two within 2 hours.

Don't know what the solution is though, and it does demonstrate how popular the Forum is, I guess.

          Cheers
          Alan
