How effective is email "blasting"?

I have about 20,000 members on my site, and I rarely if never use email marketing (sending them emails advertising). Should I? Would this make me lose members? The times I have, I've receive a few emails back saying please remove me from the list.

Get your subscribers accustomed to reading your emails by providing mostly useful information or timely news. Some email marketers have a formula for how often they slip in a promotion, something like 1 in 6. It takes more work to maintain an active list, rather then just sending out one email per Frank Kern release.

Sure you get some unsubscribes, probably the very people you would choose to thin out anyway.

It can be very effective if done correctly - if your subscribers come to know you as a valuable source of information they will look forward to receiving your emails.

It can be VERY effective assuming you are sending them something they would enjoy reading or otherwise participating in some way. I make a point of sending an email to our users at least twice per month now, and sometimes more, and rarely get unsubscribes (adding faster than I am losing).

It is okay to contact me! I have been developing software since 1999, creating many popular products like phpLD.

You can't please everybody, there will be some people on your list that want offers sent to them and some that don't.

You list will now be used to what you're sending out to them, you just need to retrain them. Set yourself a schedule, say one in every four emails is a sales email, they will soon get used to it.

Yes you will lose some subscribers but don't worry about it, let them go and concentrate on the once who are still on your list.

If all you do is send them affiliate offers all the time, pretty soon they will stop opening your emails cause they'll get tired of being bombarded with offers all the time. But if you give them great information or insights, they'll actually look forward to receiving your emails and that's the goal you want to achieve in email marketing.

Yes, if done right it can be very effective. Like everyone else has said, it needs to be quality content that you are providing them. I know that I personally get irritated when someone sends me a lot of emails trying to sell me stuff. I usually unsubscribe from their list, If they keep sending them I mark it as spam.

One way to make email blasting really effective is to have a great subject line, that way people will actually open the email to hear what you have to say. Just make sure it isn't always an advertisement. Plus if you keep sending useful information, people may even spread the word.

The messages can't seem to much like spam either. If it contains very common spam phrases it could be sent directly to junk mail. Hope that helps!
