Question: Vbulletin vs PHPBB

Why would the main reason people go for vbulletin forum when there is free version PHPBB?

I would like to build community site, but I don't know which platform I should go.

Because PHPBB is a spammers dream and owners nightmare.

But Simple Machines is a fine free alternative...

      Hi
I'm with Eric on this one! The question should be why Vbulletin when SMF is available for nada, zilch, nothing? Simple Machine Forum's! It simply work's like a charm and the support of developers and user community is unsurpassed.

vBulletin is a solid product. It's easy to setup, customize and maintain.

The free ones are ok, but vBulletin is a cut above the rest.

vBulletin is definitely the best. if your forum had lots of traffic and want to have many addon features, vBulletin is the choice. SMF is ok, but not as good as vBulletin.

Another reason for going to vBulletin is: warrior forum is based on it, there is a reason for this choice.

SMF is a really quick install with the DirectAdmin control panel,
cPanel, or Plesk. (They all use the Installatron Script Installer
installer/uninstaller, although cPanel renamed it Fantastico or
    something like that.)

The Blake board at Main Discussion runs a quite busy forum with
it, so it does have more than enough capacity for most needs.

Tony Blake did mention that it is hosted on Dreamhost, and that
at one time he had 2 hundred separate viewers of a hot video at
the same time, without a slowdown or a forum hiccup. He was
    happy about that.

I have never looked for the largest forums but just happen to be
an enthusiastic member at Bike Forums,
which has over 7 million posts, quite a lot of them with a very
large file size. People there post a lot of pictures, and people tend
to quote the whole picture when replying to the post. It uses
    vBulletin.

Just in general as well as in this thread, SMF tends to get better
    mentions than phpbb.

Thank you for everyone who gave me such wonderful advice. Until now , I never heard about SMF... I should check out...

Maybe i will start with SMF and when I get more traffics and want to squeeze the profits, then I would move to vbulletin.

    Thank you!

I'd prefer vBulletin over PHPBB any day.

Of course that's my personal preference, but I'm pretty much used to it, it's quite easily customizable, looks can be adjusted easily - and has a LOT LOT of features that makes it one of the best platforms out there.
