A Little Bit About Me. Also, Where Do I Start?

Hello everyone,

I am a recent college graduate that is currently working 45-55 hours a week with a 2-3 hour daily commute. My daily schedule consists of me waking up at 6am to shower and get ready for work, be on the road by 7am, get to work by 8am, work until 1pm for lunch, return from lunch at 2pm, get off from work between 6-7pm (if not even later), get home between 7-8pm. Since I wake up at 6am, I need to be in bed by 10pm if I want 8 hours of sleep, this means that I have a whooping 2-3 hours of personal time after I get home from work. I have to eat and do everything else that I have to do in that 2-3 hours. The worst part is that I am trading to much of my time and energy to do this, and I am only getting paid chump change!

Needless to say, my current situation is not a situation I want to be in for long. What is best way for me to generate additional streams of income given my lack of time from my current situation? I don't think I can just quit my job without securing some type of steady income first.

I have been reading up on methods of making money online, and I am not sure what is the best route for me to take is, and how to start on that route. I cannot be a Amazon affiliate because I live in Illinois, but I read that their commissions are low anyways (4%-8.5%). The other viable options seem to be AdSense and CPA. What do you knows think is the best way for me to go? What tools can I use? What proven methods should I follow?

If I can find a way to make $1 a day to start, I would consider that a success because then I would know what I am doing is working, and I will work on ways to increase that amount. If I manage to average $100 a day steadily, I think that would allow me to quit my current job and do this full time. Once I get to that level, I would focus on making even more money, $200 a day, $500 a day, $1,000 a day, with the sky being the limit!

I know I have to TAKE ACTION, but I need to know what to do first! I can't just throw knifes in the dark and hope I hit something.

You can make a dollar a day by selling stuff on eBay.

You could make $100 a day by selling your own product. 3 sales a day at $47 would more than meet that need. 3 Products selling 1 copy a day at $47 would easily meet that need.

I think you'd be better served to either move closer to your job or find another job closer to you to utilize your time more effectively.

Never quit your job until you're wealthy enough to make a permanent living online.

There are too many if's in your strategy. If you don't believe that you can do this, you probably won't. I would suggest you start by reading a couple of books. Start with The Four Hour Work Week and The Millionaire Fastlane. The Four Hour Work Week will help you with the way that you view your time, and help with your mindset. The Millionaire Fastlane will help you with your mindset as well.

At the same time I would read this forum. Just read and read and read. You don't know what you want to do because you don't know the possibilities. I am going to say this bluntly, no one is going to hold your hand and walk you through this process (at least not for free). When you finally come across something that interests you, give it a try. I know many people on hear preach that you should pick an income maker and stick with it until you make. I would suggest trying something until you fail miserably at it. If you are sick of it, then try something else and so on. I think I learned more from failing, than the little successes that made me a few dollars here and there. In fact, the more pain I felt from failure, the more I learned what not to do.

Taking action is important, but don't just do something to say you tried it. Everything you do should have an expected outcome. Once you start taking action then analyze it. What went right? What went wrong? What do your competitors do better? What can you do better than your competitors? That is a million dollar question. If your competitors are making money, and you can do it better, then you have an source of income that you can tap into. I am always amazed when I see my competitors doing the same things over and over, and receiving poor results.

Is this something that you really want to do? Or is it just a pie in the sky dream? Are you really going to give it what it takes? Or just put an hour or two into this every so often? Are you ready to listen to just about everyone you know tell you how stupid you are, and tell you how bad you will fail? Are you ready to invest serious time and money into this? These are not questions that you need to answer here. They are questions that you need to answer to yourself.

Welcome to the forum! The best of luck to you! I really hope you make it. Let me know when you make that first $100 day.

If you want to work on making money online & succeed to replace your day job, there has to be sacrifices made.

Sacrifices like do you really need 8 hrs of sleep? How about cutting it to 7 hours of sleep, & the extra 1 hour you have, you can work on building your online business. The thing here is whether you are desperate enough to want it or not. If you are, then you'll definitely make some changes. Although 1 hour may not sound like much, but every bit counts. Do something everyday & you'll reach your goal.

How about weekends? Do you work on weekends too? If not, you can focus on your online business on weekends.

There are other affiliate programs you can join other than Amazon. Commission junction, linkshare, shareasale, linkconnector, & many more you can earn commissions from. Amazon is not the only way.

First, I want to congratulate you on your academic achievement! Never stop learning!

Although this is my first post under this account, I have spent the last 15 years training technical and leadership professionals and I certainly agree with Matt. There is a wealth of knowledge available in this forum. It just takes some time to understand what is useful for your particular situation.

I would recommend that before you dive into the whirlwind and get caught up in the technical side of marketing (it's easy to do), you take a day, or a week, or as long as necessary to develop a personal success plan.

Some questions that I encourage my students to ask themselves include:
    - Why am I doing what I'm doing?
    - What are my desired outcomes (really)?
    - What skills do I have right now and what do I need to develop?
    - What are my goals? (Do you have them written down?)

Again with regard to specifics, please start with the All-in-ones and try not to spend your way to wealth by buying every promise on the internet before you understand the answers to the above questions.

    Best of luck to you.

      Hi everyone,

Thanks for your responses. I have been reading this forum for a while, but there is way too much information here, both useful and useless information. I don't have the time to read each thread and try to gather all the useful information.

Selling on Ebay is not what I had a mind as I don't see it has being a steady source of income. I don't think I have what it takes to write a $47 product that will sell 3 times a day consistently yet.

I don't think moving or finding a closer job is a great option right now because the economy is tough and it is difficult to find a decent job.

I am also well aware and have read a lot of the positive thinking books out there, such as Think and Grow Rich, Rich Dad Poor Dad, The Secret, The Millionaire Fast Lane, The Four Hour Work Week, but the problem is that they all pretty much about the same idealistic stuff without providing any real advice that will help me start earning money.

I am more then willing to make sacrifices, but the problem is that I don't know what to do. Let's say I want to spend 1-2 hours a day making money online, but I don't know how to do it or what to do.

I don't have the time to read each thread and try to gather all the useful information. No one suggested you read the entire board. That would take years. Everyone that suggested that you read the forum more did it for the same reason. You need to decide what you want to do as an online marketer. No one else can make that decision for you. Once you do that, you can ask us direct questions, and we can give you direct answers. How are we supposed to help you if you don't know what you need help with.

Selling on Ebay is not what I had a mind as I don't see it has being a steady source of income. You asked for suggestions and this was all it was. It is a steady source of income for many people. In fact those who do it best outsource their entire business (in separate pieces) and make a great steady income. I don't think I have what it takes to write a $47 product that will sell 3 times a day consistently yet. Once again, its just a suggestion. You haven't told us what your skill set is yet, so this was just another shot in the dark.

I don't think moving or finding a closer job is a great option right now because the economy is tough and it is difficult to find a decent job. Your probably right. However, Tim was merely giving you suggestions on freeing up some of the time that you currently waste everyday, in exchange for time that can help you out of the predicament you have put yourself in.

Even though you are aware of these books, you still need help with positive thinking. They all cover positive thinking, but I suggested two of them for a reason. They both help you think differently than you currently do. If you do not treat this as a new business it will be nothing more than 1-2 hours of making money online. For instance, The Secret helps you to think positively, but it does not tell you what to look for in the new business that you create. On the other hand Tim Ferriss gives you an outline on what to look for in your new business in The Four Hour Work Week.

I am more then willing to make sacrifices, but the problem is that I don't know what to do. Let's say I want to spend 1-2 hours a day making money online, but I don't know how to do it or what to do. Is 1-2 hours a day a sacrifice? I think most people anywhere in the world would be happy to give up 1-2 hours a day and create a significant income. How many professions out there allow you to learn the profession in 1-2 hours a day, and provide you with significant return on your investment very quickly?
I believe that everyone that responded did so with the intent to help you. You need to decide what you want to do. There are millions of different options. Just choose one that you want to do and try and do it. When you get stuck come back here and ask us your questions, and we will help you. Once again, good luck!

There are many different directions you can take as a beginner...The hard thing is there is no clear cut answer at where to start because there are so many methods out there...Each person is different...This forum is a great starting place to learn what it is you want to do...With more research you can begin to narrow it down to one method to focus your time and energy on...

  • My suggestion would be to try and narrow one avenue of internet marketing that interests you and go with that. You said you have spent a lot of time reading and researching this forum so pick out one specific way of marketing. Whether it be article marketing, CPA, PPC, Adsense or whatever you choose. I have no idea of your budget so you will want to keep this in mind when choosing an area to get started in. Once you do that then I suggest you consider maybe getting up a little earlier or going to bed a little later. I seem to work better first thing in the morning as by the time I have worked all day my brain is fried! I understand totally how difficult it is to work full time as when I started I owned an offline business and worked a part-time job as well. I also had to come home and cook dinner and other household chores. But really, if you choose one particular area to focus on and stick to it daily then you will start to make your first $$$. Good luck!!

    Greeting Chicago87!

It's good that you are already prepared to take action instead of just "sitting" on what you are learning. I would start with the basics and read up on affiliate marketing, squeeze pages, traffic sources, and how to write good sales copy.

Use the search function for those terms I just listed and soon you'll have a solid foundation built. Marketing can be tough, but if you're willing to learn and try and test everything that you learn about then you WILL succeed.

    Good luck

IMO if you don't have time, don't do IM. It's good enough for you to get steady job. In IM, when there's one man makes a million per month, there are other millions people who make nothing.

IMO, I think this is horrible advice. This is probably one of the last things I expect someone to say on this forum. I cannot believe someone would actually tell me to give up and encourage me to trade my time for money as a poorly paid wage slave when I am trying to improve my life and make it on my own.

The reason I don't have to time is because of my job, I do not want to work 40-50 hours a week for someone for the next 40-50 years of my life. I have been inspired by such books "Think and Grow Rich" and "Rich Dad Poor Dad". I want to be able to enjoy life and live the way I want to.

What really separates the people that make it and the people that don't? I believe a lot of it has to do with positive thinking, sheer will and ambition, as well as taking definitive action. I am currently thinking positive and I have sheer will and ambition as well, the only problem is that I don't know what type of definitive action to take. I really feel like I need a mentor, someone to put me on the right track.

I can relate to how you feel, and i would definitely recommend the mentoring approach, it is not cheap, but will get you up and running far quicker. I was given the advice some time ago, "To find someone who is doing well at what you want to do, and ask them how to do it"
I have done this and can see the benefits

I never realized how much this question gets asked on webmaster forums untill I started paying attention.

There's not really anything anyone here can tell you that you can't already find. Search is a great tool.

You have many various paths to take.

Someone linked this earlier and it's an amazing resource:
    http://www.warriorforum.com/main-int...ead-broke.html

No one can give you a full proof formula for web-mastering and internet marketing. I could tell you my exact setup and methodology and while it may work for me it may not work for you.

I've personally found the "quickest" way to make money is to offer services that can help others make money. SEO, design, coding, and so forth.

First of all, what direction do you want to take your business in? There's so many ways to make money online and if you don't have a clear cut direction or at least an idea of what you want to do (i.e. affiliate market, cpa, ppc, product creation, etc.) then it's really hard to narrow it down....So first thing, what kind of IM business do you want to pursue?

      Hi Chicago87,

It may sounds harsh to you (yet I don't intend to hurt you), but as I can see your situation from your words, your main problem is your indecisiveness. This should be changed.

      Please, take a deep breath.

You got some good answers with helping intentions, above. Many are asking you about your interests. They did well, because that is the starting point. Rest assured, a good mentor would also asks you, and much more. Otherwise s/he cannot help you.

What I'd advise you, is make a self-examination at your pace. Don't let disturb you by anything. Take a paper and a pen. Write down your skills, interests, and experiences to see in which direction you can go further. Don't hide anything, take all aspects into consideration.

Example: let's say you have writing skill and you like to write. Great. Then your first step is discover the market for your writing, before you start writing anything. Look around here at the 'Members Looking To Hire You' section to study what people seek.

Also look around at the 'Warriors For Hire' section, to know the supply side of the coin. This way you may get a picture on how to use your writing skill profitable way.

Now, you know your ability and your chances. You have enough information to make a decision. Yes... it is now the time to be decided. Make a solid plan about what kind of services you want to give, how and at what price.

If the plan is ready, start to realize it.

Of course, writing is only one of the possibilities. You know your circumstances. You need to decide (if you've enough information).

      Many successes,

      Sandor

What are you interests? What could you perceive yourself writing about on a daily basis?

What I'm getting at is perhaps, just to get your feet wet, you could start up a blog. Find a topic that truly interests you, and write articles or posts about it daily.

So one method you could take is this:

    - choose a niche/topic that you are interested in
    - purchase a domain + hosting (i.e. create a website)
    - Write unique content-rich daily posts on your website (something you could do within 30 minutes of your daily time)
    - Build traffic to your blog - you are doing some traffic building just by updating your blog daily. You could then also include an extra 15 minutes daily focusing on other traffic building methods - such as becoming a valuable part of various forums that relate to your niche, engaging in thoughtful answers on Yahoo! Answers, providing valuable comments on other blogs that relate to your niche, and so forth. These methods will also, in turn, build backlinks to your blogs which can further help your website rank in the search engines.

    - Once you start seeing a good amount of traffic going to your blog, throw in Google Adsense ads or affiliate product links (depending on your niche) and focus on conversions.

It's very possible to start making $1 a day (and much more) just by building a simple niche website and going through the above steps actively and daily. Dedicate about an hour of your time to do this - set small daily goals - and you can very easily reach your ultimate goals.

Good luck in your endeavor, and certainly don't stop the education!

    Take care,
    Elizabeth

This forum has a lot of great articles/ threads to help you.

This is what I would do:
    1. choose a niche
    2. register domain & hosting
    3. bring in traffic through adwords and other methods
    4. monetize traffic from adsense and affiliate offers.

    Chicago87,

The best thing to start with is, as others pointed out, your interests, hobbies, things you are good at.
Since you don't have much time to devote to your IM efforts, I'd suggest starting a blog about your passion/interest/strengths. It can be a personal blog or a professional blog if you feel like giving advice on what you are really good at (or your hobby). I would suggest a Web 2.0 estate like Squidoo for example to start. This way your initial investment is 0. After some time there will be enough information in your Squidoo lens to turn it into a short report that you can offer somewhere else in exchange for people's e-mail addresses, and start building your list. This time, however, you will need a domain name, hosting, and autoresponder service. Your list will attract people interested in the topic and you will be able to send them e-mails with relevant offers. Keep writing your lens (blog), too. After another while there will be enough valuable information to turn it into your own e-book to sell on amazon or here as a WSO, maybe you'll be able to record it as an audiobook, too.
    Sounds like a good start?
Just remember, it won't happen overnight as nothing good in IM happens overnight
