I just noticed this morning I had the option to upgrade to 8.0.

As with all updates I like to see what others are thinking about it and if it's any good. The last update has left my laptop crashing up to 5 times a day with the annoying "Oh how embarassing, FF has stopped working, this often happens because of the website you're on" bit.

So the question is, has anyone upgraded and does it appear to be ok?

Or am I being a dinlo and this was in fact the last update and I need to get out from under my rock?

I literally JUST updated to Firefox 8.0. No problems so far, but it's only been about 5 minutes.

I didn't update for a long time; in fact, I actually searched for and re-installed an older version (3.something) when I learned the mouse zoom addon wasn't compatible with the newer version I'd just downloaded (version 6.something I think). I kept receiving prompts to update, but ignored them. I really HATE when I upgrade to something and some other "something" doesn't work in the newer version.

So far, I like it. There's a lot more space in the browsing window, less toolbar creep.

And the mouse zoom addon IS compatible.

I have upgraded to the latest version, so far so good.

Previous version had a few crushes, so hopefully the latest version will not have this problem.

        Thanks Michelle and Takuyar,

It's only been the last version that it started crashing, it was annoying as I had just bought a new laptop so I wasn't sure if it was that.

I'm assuming (hoping) with all the reports they must have had of it crashing that they have fixed it.

Just upgraded my portable FF to version 8 (read: simple replaced the files with the new ones) and everything seem working fine so far (knocking on wood).

All crashed I had in the past were related to Adobe Flash content (problems with plugin-container.exe)

They don't seem to address memory problems even with 8.0. So have changed to Google Chrome and happy with that.

What memory problems are you talking about? I hope that doesn't sound rude, I simply mean I haven't noticed anything my end.

Fernando, I don't use Roboform I'm afraid (shame on me but I have my reasons ).

I have upgraded though and apart from one or two add ons I rarely use not currently being compatible, it seems fine. For me at least my main issue was the crashing and that, touch wood, hasn't happened since I upgraded.

        Thanks to everyone that's replied.

I believe with the newer version of FF you need the paid upgrade of roboform. I upgraded FF and had to go back to FF3 to continue using roboform.
I thought when I purchased robo a few years ago it was a one time payment, now they want to charge for the upgrade.
Currently using FF9 beta and find it fast and so far stable, no crashes.

Actually version 7 was a huge improvement for me, as far as memory issues go. I always have a lot of tabs and windows open, and FF would quickly slow to a crawl and crash. This stopped happening with 7, so I have been very happy with it. Version 8 is supposed to have improved FF on the backend, even further.

I do not get the version updates rather than updates within a version. The version numbering convention made sense, now you have no idea what you are getting. Is it a major change that will break addons, or just a bug fix? From what I have seen, it should not have been a version upgrade, but I guess all convention has been thrown out the window. It makes no sense.

Roboform 7 does work with FF8, but you need to download and install the latest version of Roboform (currently 7.6.2). Updating the addon is not enough, and FF8 did not work with the 7.5.x version I was using before the update.

FF8 is fine, few addons not supported yet including .net framework so if you are running Micro's or Bots using FF hold off until they are supported.

Other than this the only issue I have found so far is that when I go to login to Twitter my login names do not appear when I click in the "Log-in" box. Bit of a pain as I have about 50 twitter accounts but hey small price to pay to stop JS from executing in the browser.

I also got the notice to upgrade, and did so this afternoon.

Generally, I *HATE* upgrades as very few of them have any respect for how you had customized your browser ... this one really is no exception.

What was I found funny was the notice to upgrade shortly after installation. Wow.

But except for the lack of respect for my prior settings, I haven't had any problems.

I had not upgraded since 3.6x because I heard bad things about it. But I finally upgraded as I got tired of the browser locking up and crashing either the whole computer. It was very tiring. I was hoping that the new one would help, so I upgraded a day or two ago to 7.0 I think. Then I also got the notice and I thought, what the hell. Maybe it is my computer as it is pretty old. But I load a page and go to click on a button or something and nothing happens, the link is dead like it is just a picture. Then finally it becomes active and I go to click on it again and I see the not responding notice again. After a while I get to move to what I wanted to click on. It just takes so long.

During typing this post my screen stopped and then took a while to catch up to my typing five or six times. My memory is hovering around 70% so I have plenty of memery left. I am seriously thinking of going back to IE or maybe Safari.

As with all browser upgrades, the biggest pain is waiting for all the plugins to be updated to be compatible with the new version. I'm holding off for a week or two, so I don't get caught out like when I upgraded to 7.0

    Wow... what a disappointment.

Been fighting with Firefox 8 for almost an hour, it simply crashes everytime I open the damn browser... and I mean, it crashes before opening the browser window! Had to get back to FF 7 and then had major issues to bring back my Roboform...

Never had similar issues with FF but know I know why some people just report FF8 keeps on crashing - I can't even open it!!!

    Wow!!!

Oh good grief no Tim, don't do it.

If 7 is bad for you I'd either go back to what you were on before or go to 8. I was having exactly what you are having when I was on 7 but 8 cleared that up.

      Not for Fernando sadly though.

The updates are out of control. FF was great when it first came out - a nice, fast, low overhead alternative to IE. Now? Those days are long gone and each update seems to make it less and less reliable.

I've gone back to 3.6 and now looking at alternatives.

Not sure what it's market share is, but I'm guessing it is downward.

Thank goodness for Firefox 8 because everything since version 6 was sucking badly. Had to do several manual tweaks to the about:config in Firefox in all versions or many sites wouldn't connect properly. I was almost ready to dump Firefox for Opera until Version 8.

So far so good. Sometimes, Firefox can behave really badly with certain add-ons. I had an add-on once that kept crashing the Flash plugin and it was a pain.

OK, I have been using Firefox 8 for over a week now. Pretty much all the plugins i used with Firefox 7 all work in 8. The latest Roboform works, as I mentioned in my previous post. HOWEVER, I will be going back to Firefox 7 for now. I use a lot of windows and tabs, and Firefox has always been a problem with the memory leak bogging down everything. Firefox 7 was a huge improvement in that area, and made my browsing experience so much better. Firefox 8 seems to have go backwards in this area. It bogs down and stops responding constantly.

I don't understand the logic behind these version changes. Pick a good working version and patch it to make it better. While they are changing versions frequently, they are updating less frequently, and changing versions just causes problems.

I updated this morning before trying to come on here, and the very first thing to happen was that I couldn't get the forum to load lol. Something to do with enabling cookies even though they are already enabled. After a few minutes I just said screw it and walked away for a little while.
