What Do You Like To Read On A Website's Header?

Say you're in the market for web hosting. You've never purchased it before. You go to a site and the header has a stylistic web hosting related logo, and it says alongside it in relatively large font, as it is a header...

"Web Hosting"

"#1 Web Hosting Source"

"Your #1 Web Hosting Guru"

"Your Web Hosting Guru"

"Your Web Hosting Source"

... which would make you want to stick around longest (with assumptions about the rest of the site put aside - assuming the rest of the site looks fine).
#good #header #line #reader #tag #website

#1,2,5 - Unless you are actually providing the hosting (via reseller account or whatever), these are deceptive as you are not the source for anything.

#3,4 - The self-proclaimed 'guruhood' would have me reaching for the back button before the rest of the site ever got to be an issue.

Given the actual wording of your question, though, the first one might get a few more seconds to 'prove up' than the others.

A lot would depend on how I actually arrived at your site, though. If it came from clicking a SERP, your title/description would have a much greater effect than a header graphic. If I came via someone's personal referral, the header wouldn't have much effect either way.

None of them actually promises any tangible benefit for sticking around.

Another factor would be WHY I might be investigating web hosts. Think about it - the needs and desires of a newbie are wuite different from those of someone who needs to move one or more sites quickly with as little fuss and delay as possible.

Figure out what segment of the hosting market you want to serve. Figure out the biggest, brashest benefit you know you can deliver to someone in that segment.

    Put that in your header...

I would say leave the word "Guru" out of your headline, as most people now tend to see through these kind of hypey headlines.

My recomendation is to use "#1 Web Hosting Source" or "Your Web Hosting Source" as I feel you would get better conversions.

You question made me think that I would like to see: "web hosting with difference..."

    something like that

    then immediately prove it somehow...

I would suggest you go for sliding header and good lines with good images... Below are the some lines which you can use

    Slider 1 :- 99% Up Time Hosting
    Slider 2 :- 24 * 7 Email & Phone Support
    Slider 3 :-Your Webhosting Source
Slider 4 :- Reviews Of your client + Sign up now Starting at [ Your Lowest Plan ]

Sorry for the confusion I might have caused. My site is actually a comparison/review site with reviews/information on web hosting. My ideal visitors are first buyers for web hosting or people looking to change their host and seeking what some of the best alternatives might be.

      That's actually two different markets...

Think about what you might be looking for in a web host if this is your first hosting account. Maybe things like:

      > Ease of use
      > Tutorial videos
      > Multiple support options

      For this market, something like

"Web Hosting - The Right Choice the First Time."

Someone looking to change hosts is someone having a problem with their current host. For them, something like

      "'No Headache' Hosting Options"

I think you shouldn't ask us. IM'ers can spot marketing hype miles away. I'd do a research although that could be fairly hard to do.

I would like to see benefits of staying on the site. If your site is a web hosting review site, then I would like to see something along the lines of "Find out who's hot and who's not in web hosting". If I'm shopping around for a web host, then I would want to know who is the best in the industry and who to avoid. Therefore, I would probably stick around to see what's on your site if it stated a benefit similar to the above.

Personally, I'd go for the final one. Guru is such an overused term that I'd say it's a turnoff and the first one seems too generic to me, not offering any differentiation.
