Autoresponder email deliverability

In the past when I've interviewed email marketing experts, they've always talked about how both aWeber and GetResponse, as well as some of the smaller AR services, work hard with ISPs on a regular basis to ensure a continually high deliverability rate.

But I'm not so sure these days.

If you had a list of 50,000 people, and knew from tracking that only about 5,000 opened their email on a regular basis, would you suspect deliverability issues?

If that list was with GetResponse, would you consider trying to move it to another service to see if the open rate increased?

And... what service do you know of that would actually allow you to do that without having everyone confirm their opt in again, when they've already double-opted in?

10% open rate is rather low, but there are many other factors to consider before suspecting deliverability. For example, if your subscriber list was offered a freebie just for subscribing you should expect a very low open rate. I am guilty of subscribing to hundreds of lists just to get their offers, then have the followups dumped into a bulk folder.

That is a very low rate however one would have to ask how old this email list is? Is it kept clean? People move on from different email address's all the time once one fills up. I know I do! I have over 50 different email address from my sites. If the mail addresses are old get rid of them ask for a re confirmation of some sorts. Why pay for a 50,000 list when only 10 % open and 1 percent buys and pay all that money. When you can cut your list cleanly down to 5,000 80% opening and 10% buying. Keep your lists clean and updated at all times.

With fresh hot opt-ins that would be low but with
a list that size I bet the interest of the majority of
    subscribers is pretty stale.

In regards to what service allows you to import a list without having your people double opt-in again... None that I am aware of.

And, I've seen e-mails from all services of all prices go into spam folders (yes, even Infusionsoft, which is quite spendy.) And if you think service "X" has a deliverability rate of say 90%, 100% of the time, that's wrong too, that's why all services keep working at it.

While it may be suggested that delivery will increase with more respected ESPs, it always comes down the marketing practices of the marketer. Additionally, it comes down to the expectations at opt-in, during the marketing campaign and the overall value provided in email.

Technically, it's related to IP reputation, confirmed opt-in and the integrity of contacts themselves. Promoting a healthy opt-in, will result in healthy marketing.

The open rate you see is not accurate. The real open rate is higher, because some email programs or users block images in emails, and when that happens, the open doesn't get recorded.

Of course, an opened email isn't the same thing as one that was read.

      1. Are you keeping your list clean by deleting the bounces? This will become very major issue with free email accounts. 50% of free email addresses wll be banned by the users with in 1 year of time. So just delete these bounces.

      2. You are saying Getresponse is sending email to the list. So you'd be sure of going into their email inboxes. Right? So leave this deliverability issue aside.

      3. How targeted is the list? If you opt-in them for one niche and sending general/different niche related emails, the mere subject line stops them to open the email.

      4. Consistent contact: I ALWAYS STRESS THIS POINT. Constant contact with your list makes your list better and better evetryday in publisher-subscriber relationwise.

AutomateYourList appears to be another private label version of Aweber.

Open rates aren't reliable as images in html emails are often blocked.

    Great commentary in this forum. I agree with a lot of what was said. The most important things to do is;

    1. Scrub/clean your list.

    2. Always put messages in both the html field and the text field

    3. Don't spam your list

As others have said, the open rate is actually only the number of people that have loaded an image in your email. If an email client doesn't display images (like gmail by default for example) then it won't display as being opened.

Clickthrough rates are more reliable because they even work in text mode.

It's all relative though, play with the wording of your subjects and first lines. Play with personalization, play with the day and time you send your emails, play with split testing so you know which is working better and why.

Use your open rates as relative, is it more than last time? Then you probably did something right, is it less than last time? Then you probably did something wrong.
