Best way to secure a domain name

Hi Everyone,

I am interested in a domain name that expired on 15 Dec.
I believe the owner still has some time to renew it.
But if he doesn't, does anyone know how to secure it
without having to wait for months till it is released again?

I have contacted the owner at the email I got from whois,
but have not heard back.

I know that GoDaddy offer a service to try to secure a name,
but I don't see them doing any more than I have already done
by trying to email him and one has to pay them upfront and it's
non-refundable no matter what the outcome.

Does anyone have any better ideas, or aren't there any?

Thanks,
Angela

    Hello,

Who is the registrar of this domain? and as you said it expires on the 15th, there are many options..

    1) the domain will go to redemption period and the registrar might offer it on other sites , please check Domain Auctions, Expired Domain Names, and Available Aftermarket Domain Names for Sale - NameJet or www.snapnames.net , if you find the domain DO NOT PLACE any bids on it , beside the domain you will find the type, prerelease or pending delete for namejet and for snapnames you will see DROP or you will see the registrar name and the availability day...

First check who is the registrar.. if its godaddy or enom or whatever company then after that we can determine when and how you can get it, do not use Godaddy services , you shouldn't contact the owner because they will renew it and ask for more..

Okay that is some good news! go to auctions.godaddy.com and search for the domain, usually the domains when they expire they go there.. at some point before they release it, they will put it there, if you find it there look at the time left for you to put a bid.. do not put a bid to early.. I usually put a bid in the last 5 minutes so people do not notice it.. I even try to do it in the last minute..

btw when you do a whois, do you see the status as : redemption period ?

I don't see "redemption period" on the whois, but on the actual domain url there is a
Godaddy landing page and it says:

NOTICE: This domain name expired on 12/15/2011 and is pending renewal or deletion.

did you try to check the auctions.godaddy.com ? they usually list the domains there before they send them to redemption, I don't want to ask you about the domain lol but it should show up there unless they already listed it there and nobody placed a bid on it..

It's not showing up yet. I don't think it's a domain name others would
necessarily rush to grab. It is only important to me because I happen
to have a product by the same name.

From the date it expires, you have about an 80 day wait before it becomes available to register. The last 5 days of the 80 day cycle will say "pending delete" in the Whois info. That's when you need to watch it closely. The only other way to get ahold of it before the 80 days are up is to buy from the current owner.

Seems like the redemption period is typically 50 days, though some registrars compress the process a bit.

If your worried about competition grabbing the name you would probably have to bite the bullet and put in your initail $60 bid with a name catcher like SnapNames.com, Pool.com and NameJet.com which use high power hardware to detect a name's available within milliseconds, scooping the lone domainers.

So even if I do use a NameCatcher service, I will still have to wait 80 days?
That's a long time to wait. Wasn't there a movie about going around the world in 80 days!
    Sheesh...

Are you sure godaddy didn't add an extra year to the domain? I checked most of the domains in that are listed in the auction expiring/closeout and I noticed Godaddy extended them for 1 year so its 2012 .. they have alot of $hity domains there that doesn't make any sense but I think they can extend it for 2012 for a while and if nobody buys it, then they release it... double check on the year maybe ur pc cache is still showing 2011

EDIT: or maybe the domain already went to the auction and nobody bought it since its been 10 days so they decided to release it which means u have to wait for a long time until it changes to redemption then pending delete..

I don't see that, it just says:

    Created on: 15-Dec-09
    Expires on: 15-Dec-11

It hasn't been updated for over a year.

Bottom line, OP, is make that backorder with Go Daddy. From what you described
here, the domain name's still expired and within their control.

Follow that link I posted here. That'll directly answer your questions, then just ask
Go Daddy to clarify if needed.

      Good luck!

I agree with the previous comment i.e. put in a backorder with GoDaddy Auctions. Alternatively, look for a similar name with your desired keyword and pagerank or potential visitors even if it is a .net, as long as you can get your marketing campaign off the ground.
