Hosting for large membership site

Hey,

I'm about to launch a brand new product/program that is going to be targeting large numbers of visitors which will have videos playing on the sales page, and have a number of videos being played in the membership area.

I am wanting to know of a good hosting place I am able to host it where I won't have any issue with the site going down caused by too much bandwidth, too much visitors, etc. as there is going to be a large amount of advertising, online marketing and will be bring affiliate on board.

Can anyone recommend a good hosting plan that will not have any issues with this?

I have the site on bluehost, but is shared hosting and want to back it completely up and transfer it before the launch. Any advice here is welcome and appreciated!

Cheers,

Dave

It really depends on how large we're talking about here. Depending on your needs, a VPS (virtual private server) plan may provide more than enough space and bandwidth, but there is a point at which nothing but a dedicated server (or more) will suffice.

If you don't have a good handle on exactly what your needs are going to be, your focus should be on choosing a hosting company whose plans are a good value at any level, allowing you to scale up as needed.

Do yo know any Hosting Companies that have this? as it is hard to estimate it until we get the first round of traffic in, and the marketing will only increase over time.

You are best to just use regular web hosting for the site but host all your videos and content on a storage service like Amazon S3. You won't have any problems if you do that and it's dirt cheap -- you only pay for what you use.

This is how most people do it these days.

You could consider using Amazon's S3 for storing and serving you're videos, then just embed a jwplayer script that references the videos on the S3 service - you only pay for the bandwidth and storage you use and it's very cheap. It's an easy and cheap way to get started. Then you can gauge your next move based on actual data of your usage.

Thanks! I'm using Digital Access Pass and this is built in so this should be much easier to implement than i thought.

    Thanks guys!

actually just confirming... so using a normal hosting from say bluehost is probably gonig to be fine for the purposes of the site if the videos are being hosted through the amazon s3?

I would move away from Bluehost before starting your membership site, as they have no scaling option. If you have too much traffic, regardless of hosting your videos with Amazon S3, you may run into problems at a shared solution.

I was in your situation, running a WP based membership site with Optimizepress + DAP and hosted at Bluehost. Videos with EVP2, hosted with Amazon S3. I moved over to Knowhost and a VPS there, just to have scaling options.

If you have little tech knowledge I would suggest you move over to Hostgator instead and start with a shared solution there. At Hostgator you can always scale it to VPS or dedicated. You cannot do this currently at Bluehost as they do not offer this.

      Good luck.

For Video hosting Amazons3 all the way.
For site hosting use Hostgator so you can scale up when you need to
Membership site use optimize press for site structure
For membership management you can sue S2member (free or Pro) or DAP or Wishlist
If you think you will have a large membership form the off I would strongly recommend you gear up for this from the start as if you have to move things later on it may be a nightmare

I agree with the above posts. Wordpress can be a resource hog so go with a web host that offers an upgrade path to managed VPS plans or a dedicated server.

Well I wanted to thank everyone with all this!

I have decided to go ahead with the dedicated Server for the 1st month to ensure nothing will crash! Plus we are also going to host the videos via the Amazon S3 also - so looks like i've basically taken all your advices and wanted to thank you all!

Woah pumped for this! This is my first launch of a product and basically I couldn't be happier with what is about to launch - hopefully only the next few days and it should be up and running and available to the public!

If anyone is looking at wanting to become an affiliate to this product (specialist Weight loss program - goes for 3 months reoccurring billing + upsell on an additional content, videos, etc.) Please msg me and I will send all affiliate details out as soon as they are ready to go - all will be going through clickbank also.

    Once again thanks all!

I would suggest using UK Web Hosting | Scalable Cloud Hosting by CatN they have never let me down with my high traffic sites!

The run on a clustered solution so it splits the traffic may you have a spike which means - 100% uptime!
