Hi all

I have spent recent months putting together my website and have managed to achieve between 150 and 200 unique's a day.

My ultimate aim is to make a little money through the site but I am focusing on value first (well to the best of my ability anyways ).

Apart from Adsense I would like some suggestions and comments on what I am can do to meet my readers needs better and make a little cash from affiliate links.

I am perhaps a little too worried about ensuring the site is not too salesey and I don't think I've caught that balance between a good site and another rehashed sales site. Any suggestions?

Also I am really crap at collecting a list. It's just not happening and I need help please........

Really appreciate your help.

    Sorry to reply hurriedly ...

There's a lot that's very good about your site.

But one thing isn't so good, and it explains why your list-building's going badly. The opt-in isn't prominent enough, and it isn't incentivised enough.

At the top of the home page, where you now have the NHS video, I think you'd do well to have a bit of text, and some bullet-points, a little more in "squeeze-page style", explaining to people what they're going to get when they sign up, why they need it, and what it'll do for them. (the video can go lower down the page?).

    Also - a more attractive opt-in box wouldn't hurt?

Also - you don't need their names, do you? You'll get more opting in, if you ask for email address only. (You're surely not going to use their first names in your autoresponder series? I certainly wouldn't: customers don't like it much, typically - they know it's only an automated function and some think it makes you sound a little like an insurance salesman. You'll do better without it, IMHO - just saying!).

I also think you may need to check how your home page looks in various different browsers. I had no problem, but am wondering, because of the width ... try: Check Browser Compatibility, Cross Platform Browser Test - Browsershots

I don't like the "paper bag on head" photo, myself. I completely "get the point" of it, but would still lose it, myself. It's where your opt-in box should be ... :p

This speaks highly of your long-term prospects: most people have the (worse) opposite problem. However, with an opt in, you have to get people to opt in to the thing, so in that one place, I think you need to be more "salesy" than you are the moment.

Alexa is spot on regarding the fact that you don't need to collect their names, I've tested this extensively and the difference in conversions is huge. Just ask for their email and that's it.

Another thing you can do is right after they subscribe, redirect them to an OTO with the option of buying that product later at a bigger price.

Holy Cow, Alexa! I finally went ahead and fixed the top of my home page so it better resembled what you described here. Didn't change anything else, just made a little "pitch" (a few strongly worded sentences with some urgency of "do you know how to...") with a couple of bullet points on what you'd find out in my free report. I included a "Sign Up Here" type of line in red lettering with a very basic arrow pointing to where my opt-in box was.

I did this at about 2pm today. It is now just a bit short of 7 hours since then and I already have more opt-ins in that time than I've ever had in an entire day - WOW!

I know I'll still have up-and-down days with more and fewer sign-ups, but I'm so happy about the uptick in my email sign-ups. One small change and it made all the difference.

Thanks so much Alexa for the great info on improving my sign-up area.

I see that you are using Aweber. You should create a "light-box" hover ad for everyone who visits your homepage. Keep it at once per visitors. That way when the same visitor comes back to your homepage, they wont see the hover ad again.

Also, you could probably create a squeeze page, offer a free ebook on "milk acne", include your product/affiliate links through the ebook... and then continue to email them and get them to visit your site via your website link. Also, throw some Adsense on there as soon as possible. Good site dude.

Hi - I also noticed that the name on the "tab" that shows on the top of the browser window has "diary" instead of "dairy". Not sure if you'd seen that.

I put my auto-responder box in the exact place you have that paper bag picture, not further off to the side. And I think the auto-responder box will do more good in that spot than your picture.

Edit: I had a problem like this recently - I had spelled one word in the title wrong in the All in One SEO settings. Took a few seconds and it was fixed.
