How does one effectively build and KEEP a mailing list that doesn't disintegrate from opt outs over time?

Eventually become a master at traffic generation or at least begin to understand how you can generate a steady stream of visitors to any page you want.

    Then...

Be extremely good to your subscribers supplying them with insightful, funny, informative etc. info in your emails while staying in contact at least once a week - forever, until they opt out.

If people are looking forward to your emails and you deliver they won't ever unsubscribe.

    Hope This Helps!!

    TL

Ps. There's no need of getting a 3rd party autoresponder account like aweber until you can get a steady stream of visitors to any page you desire.

    Hi Gary,

This used to be a problem for me. And here's what I did to overcome it. I started really communicating with my list. And I am not talking about sending offers to your list. Forget that at first. That's why lists shrivel up. You need to create a relationship. In other words, create a marketing pipeline that advances the person. There is not a simple anwer... here's an excellent video that talks about keywords. The right keywords are essential to creating an effective marketing pipeline and understanding how to be more effective at communicating. Let me know if you need any other assistance....

    Hi Gary,

You basically want to send your readers good content. I usually write my own articles and send it to them. Many like them and stay on my list.

Again, you want to give them good content and not just BUY THIS all the time.

At the same time, you do want to make money from your list so sending an offer once in a while is a good way to go.

If you can get some videos on YouTube and send this to them, that would also help people stay on your list. This way, you are showing them who YOU are.

Remember: The money is not in the list!

I've seen people build lists of 300,000+ subscribers, and they have trouble pulling $500 out of their lists. I've also seen lists of 5,000 that easily make $1.000,000 per year.

The money is in your relationship with the list!

    Hi Gary -

    Steve Robison here.

Three key words to maintaining your list . . . relationship, relationship, relationship. Your focus should be on building a relationship . . . not selling a product. If you build a relationship first, the sales will come.

'Over deliver' good, sound, helpful information. People don't usually join a list to buy something . . . they join a list to get information that will help them.

So give them good, solid information, sprinkled very, very lightly with offers . . . offers are like salt on food . . . a little bit of salt is good . . . it's really easy to sprinkle too much salt, thus totally destroying the taste.

I agree with tomas about relationships. I have just spent time at a seminar with Liz Tomey and she emphasized the relationship we needed to have with our lists

    1. Be clear from the beginning why you are building your list and keep that in mind each time you write an email.

    2. Focus your traffic generation on a precisely targeted niche, it's about the quality of traffic rather than the quantity.

    3. It's just as important to sell a subscription as it is to sell a product.

    4. Get to know your readers, their problems, their questions and their passions.

    5. Deliver on your promises.

can you elaborate on the "pipeline" concept that was touched on in the video you suggested? I am not sure how you mesh keywords of your subject/product/service with the headlines that are popular.

Seems like most of the popular headlines are too general to fit.

I'll try to keep my answer simple & short...

    1. Building Relationship by...

    - Over DELIVER

    - Moving Your Freeline (videos, articles, audios)

    - Build a Community out of your list (blog w/ contests or something)

    - Interaction (surveys, ask me button on your blog, etc)

    - Moving Their Freeline (Find other "free lines" within your market and let them (your list) know about what you found which will build your relationship and let them trust you even though its other peoples content)

    - TeleSeminars, Webinars and more (Interview an expert, have someone (a friend or family member) interview you or put together a presentation for them)

    - Invite them all to "friend you up" on Social Networking sites (MySpace, Twitter, Facebook, etc..)

    - Do a "Ustream" (live video presentation) that is educational or funny or whatever (a few weeks ago there were "1996 viewers" of a dog sleeping in its "doggie bed" cuz they wanted to see the puppies this dog just had... so if your more interesting then a "Sleepy Dog" then DO NOT worry yourself about being to exciting or professional or whatever things might hold you back)

Maybe, ONLY do the greater stuff from people that HAVE bought from you already and then have them leave comments on your blog saying "how great your teleseminar was" and this will be your Social Proof to get the others "anxiously awaiting for your to offer them something" so they can buy whatever you offer them...

    Hope this helps some...

Once in a while, it is good to do a survey. Ask them what they want.. their challenges.. Then focus on that.

luv your quote "So give them good, solid information, sprinkled very, very lightly with offers . . . offers are like salt on food . . . a little bit of salt is good . . . it's really easy to sprinkle too much salt, thus totally destroying the taste."

Gary has said it well. Personally, I usually opt out of lists if the "salt tends to be too much". For sure, there is nothing that pays like overdelivering. Your clients feel indebted to you. When you bring in an offer, they glady take it as a means of paying back.

Some great suggestions so far, I would agree that you have to stimulate your subscribers by emailing them with interesting and informative information with a sense of humor at a minimum of a least of once or twice a week. If you can get your subscribers to look forward to receiving your emails and you offer them valuable and useful information they won't unsubscribe from your list! Hope this helps! :-)

    Hi,

As lots of other people have stated, build a relationship with your list. Find out how you can help your list to benefit the most, and then provide them with that information. Either in the form of a video, newsletter, e-mail, product recommendation, in some other way. Anything that helps them to improve their lives and reduce the problems they are having within the targeted niche.

For example, a great way to build a IM related list is from 'Giveways' - providing something value for FREE in exchange for their contact details. You then send a follow-up e-mail offering them something else for FREE explaining the BENEFITS to them. Follow this up with another e-mail that points them to another related and useful article or blog post. Then recommend a useful and related product. Ask for feedback on the product. Continue to build the relationship from there.

Also give away personal information about yourself, so they know you are a person and show them some of your personality. People BUY from other people because they know them, like them and trust them.

And one more thing - ALWAYS try to OVER-DELIVER. Go that extra step for your customers - they will appreciate it and remember you next time!

    To your success,

    Dave

    Hi,

I forgot to add that the main thing is to INTERACT with your list. Get them to leave feedback, by asking them questions or asking them for their opinion on something you've done.

    To your success,

    Dave
