What are the pitfalls to avoid when moving a WP site to another host (inc. all site data & plugins)

I have some SEO hosting with a company that is usually pretty good, but one of my IP's (and the site hosted on it) is continually having problems that the others don't.

For some reason they just wont swop it out for me, and I'm wondering how much work is involved as this may be the reason they want to keep "investigating" instead of just doing as I request.

So, if I swop it to another host myself, what can I mess up?

The site is 2,500 pages and has 20 plugins so I can imagine this turning into a nightmare!

Any advice would be greatly appreciated

Don't delete the original until you've successfully copied/duplicated it to another host/IP.

I've used a plugin called duplicator and it's very easy to use. Just search for it on the Wordpress plugins site and download it from there. That way you will get the most updated version. Follow the instructions there and you should be good to go.

The database is where the meat of your site is stored, so make sure to properly copy that. Duplicator does this for you so you should be good to go.

Again, DON'T delete the original until you're satisfied that you've successfully transferred it.

OH!!!!! Sorry, I forgot to answer your question.... LOL

The risks you take when moving are really within the url. If you change the url, you could stand to lose your traffic.

I've duplicated sites before to make it easier and quicker to set up new ones. However, I didn't need to keep the same url. It's just an idea, but if you've got a blank url you can use, transfer your existing site to it using the duplicate plugin. Then you can transfer the url to a different hosting service and then duplicate it back to that url again.

Maybe someone else has a better solution, but that would work. You can also use a clone plugin to do this as well. Just remember to go into your site using an FTP client and copy the database for that exact site to your computer. Without that database, you've got nothing.

Then you would need to copy that back in once everything is transferred. The clone plugins I've used do all of this for you, but some don't. So be careful.

Yea, I would only worry about the URL structure changing, (ie your post have links to one url that no longer exists.)
