Question About Marketing Via Youtube... Love to Get Some Thoughts Here

I posted this in Off Topic but wasn't getting responses so I thought I'd ask here.

So I'm in a band and I figured a nice (if not unoriginal) way to promote our music would be to do videos of acoustic covers of other artists.

Here's my question: should I create a separate account for this series of videos?

It occurred to me that while I already have a YouTube account for our band and have uploaded some of our songs set to static backgrounds as videos, I should create a separate channel/account for these covers for a few reasons.

One is we probably don't want hundreds of covers covering up and suffocating our original material. Original material should have its own channel. If people want to check out the covers, they can go to the little trouble of going to that channel.

Secondly, I understand that you can't make money off of a YouTube channel which has any copyrighted material whatsoever. No one makes money off of cover videos they do like this as it's not allowed, and I think if you have even just one video where you're playing someone else's material, that means you can't make money from any content on your channel whatsoever.

Finally (and I'm not really sweating this but you never know) in case they do ever get power crazy and shut down all accounts with copyrighted abused material (like cover videos), the original account wouldn't be affected.

Ultimately I'm thinking I should create a separate channel then just link back in the description to our original content and videos for the promotion that way.

Thoughts?

I agree with you using the 2nd channel for your covers. On your cover song videos, I would add a full screen annotation that takes the viewer to one of your original songs

Trial and Error.. see if it works.. sounds a good plan to me.

The problem with trying to put them all on the same account and hoping I don't have any issues is that I likely wouldn't know the error for quite some time and it'd be a mess after I've already gotten tons of views (ideally) on all those videos, so it requires a bit of forethought.

The biggest concern I'd have about having the single account is like you mentioned - if there ever is a crackdown on copyright material then you could lose the entire account. One of the most popular examples of this is a band named Boyce Avenue. They have done extremely well using covers as a way of promoting their brand. I believe that they have both their originals and their covers on the same account (as far as I can see on their channel), which I know is very effective for them and they're insanely successful doing this.

If I was doing this, I'd probably sprinkle a few covers on my channel as well as have a fresh channel with only covers. If people like your sound they'll probably just search you through google and/or youtube and land on the covers as well as the originals.

Trial and error is really the only way to know for sure!

Good luck! I'd like to check out the band as well - what's the name?
