Amazon Review Sites..Do I need to build a List?

Here's a general example of how you can build a list with an Amazon review site:

Let's say that your niche is treadmills. You can put a link on your review site (top-right corner usually works for me) that offers a free report on "The Best Treadmills of 2012" or "What You HAVE TO Know Before Buying a Treadmill" or "The Secret To Finding The BEST Prices on Treadmills", or any other topic of value to the reader. They will opt in with their email address to get it sent to them. Write up a short report and set it up with an autoresponder, and BOOM! You're now starting to build a list.

Aweber, although a lot of successful IM-ers I know use GetResponse and love it, primarily because it is cheaper and they have a great interface. I may be switching soon.

You don't necessarily have to build a list from these sites, and I'd venture that 95% of Amazon marketers don't. In my opinion it is a simple step which can make A LOT of money and is worth doing on ALL Amazon sites.

If you don't build a list you are always looking for new customers rather than selling to existing customers - unless your site is really good and people bookmark it or remember the name and return to it. Different niches have different characteristics regarding whether people will buy related products and hence will be impacted by this in different ways.

If you decide to build a list, you can also consider promoting Clickbank products that relate to your physical product. So if you have treadmills, there's lots of fitness/diet/health products that you can promote as well!

Just be sure to not always be spamming. Add value by sending some really good informative emails.

Nearly all of my Amazon sales are directly from my lists; some subscribers have been regular buyers for several years. Especially in the most hotly competitive niches, having a list of buyers who consistently trust your recommendations gives you an edge over all the ambiguous "review sites", which results in very high conversion rates.

If I were to build a secondary amazon site,In a completely different niche, would I need to start a new list?

What seems to work best is to have a list for each niche. For example, I am active in 67 quite distinct and separate niches. Each list promotes as many as 700 niche-relevant Amazon products over the course of the autoresponder sequence, which may take several years to cycle through incrementally higher end products.

  People who have OPTED INto your lists are by far the MOST RESPONSIVE buyers. Just make TARGETED offers and regular emails, to maximize sales.
  
  The more targeted and more valuable the information you send to your list subscribers, the more sales / conversions you should see. DO EVERYTHING YOU CAN TO MAXIMZE THE SIZE OF YOUR LISTS!
  
  The other thing to remember, is to test your offers - learn about split testing, etc. This will MAXIMIZE sales!

Also you should use your list to sell massive amounts of low-cost products, and concentrate on high-cost products on your review site. This way, you can easily hit the 8% payout point.

I don't think every Amazon site is suitable for list building. The way I see it there are 2 types of sites where it's worth building a list...

1. Any site where you get a lot of traffic. If you can capture email addresses and set up and autoresponder series then you'll be able to get those visitors coming back to your site and increasing the chances of getting them to buy through your affiliate links. These lists aren't very important as they most likely won't be long term buyers. Just set up a 9-10 auto-response series aimed at getting them back to your site and then forget about it.

2. Any sites that have products which are part of a larger niche or market. Eg... if you have a site that reviews golf balls then you can build a list and market more expensive golfing equipment to them. These are the lists that are potentially very good value if you treat them well.

Keep in mind that this is just from what I've learned observing others. In my own personal experience I have only briefly built a list on 2 of my Amazon sites and found it wasn't worth the money or effort. I'll definitely be trying it again on some of my other sites when I get the time.

I haven't gotten to building real lists with amazon review sites mainly because I've always thought it's a numbers game and I have far too many sub niches so that results in too much logistics.

But an idea i'll definitely be looking into now.

Building a list is more important than building a website. You can build a list and just use it on WSO's. But, yes, Build a list!!

Amazon sites are big money makers are you need to have a list for them just like any other money making site.
