How do you analyze competing websites?

I want to start affiliate marketing, but don't know how to analyze the competing websites. Is Seoquake enough?

How can I find the number of backlinks, internal links etc.

    Hey FaisalKhan,

    I personally use the free version of Majestic SEO to look into the backlinks of the top ten sites competing for a keyword that I am targeting. The tool gives a good in-depth analysis of the links and I'm sure the paid version will offer even more. I know some folks don't like Majestic SEO, but I have personally found it helpful, so I thought I'd throw it out there for you.

    If you register for a free account, you can use their Bulk Backlink Checker to analyze up to 20 sites, which has always been more than enough for me. It also doesn't hurt to look at your competitor's sites. Sometimes a glance can give you insight to the quality of a website. It amazes me how some sites ever rank the way they do, but also shows me that ranking higher is totally attainable.

    Hi FaisalKhan, there's other things to consider apart from backlinks such as page rank and website age. Why dont you head to the SEO forum here and do a search. There's plenty of useful discussions and tips to consider.

      For me looking at a variety of sites is the only alternative.

      I look up is the plug-in SEO for Firefox and the site woorank. Until recently woorank was a free service, but you still get one free weekly analysis. For larger traffic quantcast is good at giving demographic information, and compete.com is good at giving rough traffic data (Google Analytics stats are always the best). On top of that I would add googlekeywordtool and google trends to get an understanding of the industry the business is in. This is particularly important if you are considering buying a site. If the trend is down, and their figures are up, something starts smelling fishy to me. And then it is important to use the sites together to get interpretations of the results.

      I would suggest putting together as excel spreadsheet and put all the variables together there with links to the site you can get the information. And then not get lost in details.

    I dont think competitors will be much of an issue. If you can find a way to get leads onto the page and generate the opt-in... you have no worries about other competing websites because you're winning on your side of things, and you're (hopefully) getting alot of traffic to your site on a daily basis.

    All you have to do is focus on the anchor text that is being used and see what your competitor is trying to rank in. You can then make a list of websites after using seoquake, or any other free backlink tools. The most common people recommend is market samurai.

      There are different angles you can look upon when doing competitor analysis. And the tools you need may depend on which angle you want to see about the competition.

      For instance, if you want to look on how well the on-page optimization has been by your competitors, you may use the websitegrader.com as well as aboutus.org sites. These sites provides free on-page analysis on a site's homepage.

      Moreover, if you want to look at how the competition are linking back to their pages and where they've placed their links on, you can use blacklinkwatch.com and linkdiagnosis.com - both tools are working perfect for backlink analysis.

    To start I go to google query box and write "keyword" to see the amount of sites that have the same phrase on their site.

    Then I use market samurai to see my competion url age, amount of backlinking for that page, in-page seo etc. For me this program is only useful for this because it's freaking slow for other things. You can get a 30 day free trial and their tutorial is very helpful even if you have no intention in paying for their service.

    Although I guess there are free programs out there.
