Getting Lot of SPAM messages in my blog - Good Signal?

Hi guys, how are you?
hope you are all doing fine.

I have a blog (the one in my sig) that I am using to make a name of myself and share useful and free resources to all kind of people for the Internet Marketing Niche. It has no more than a month old, very fresh and new, and it slowly is starting to generate some traffic.

This is the thing, today I had to moderate almost 50 SPAM comments, and I had to delete them all. This is the first time I get so many comments in a single day... is this a good signal that the blog is starting to have more visibility?

If this is going to be usual from now on I will have to install some WP plugin to auto delete the spam messages. But I would like to hear your opinions about this, is this normal or I am driving my blog to a place full of junk where all these spammers come to "visit" my place?.

Thanks!

My opinion is that this is not a good sign. You should actually get rid of these spam comments. Try installing plugins like commentLuv etc to finetune these kind of spams.

Actuually when your site is live, those SEO guys use softwares like scrapbox, seonuke etc to find out blogs where comments are allowed and post their url's for backlinks, and we can't say this as a good sign for traffic for your site. It is nothing more than that your blog has been detected by their backlinking softwares. Don't approve those kind of comments and mark as spam and get rid of them. Only approve those comments related to the topic of your post.

Either your blog has been placed on some kind of list where commenting is 'easy' or some software such as scrapebox is directing people to your website/posting comments on it automatically.

I would strongly recommend you get akismet - it is a pretty strict plugin, so a small percentage of genuine comments might be deleted accidentally just because they have a shady looking link, but overall, it is great for making sure comments go to your spam folder directly.

yeah, it's ok to be strict up front and keep your blog professional with only genuine comments that add value to other users' experience.

      Darn those spam bots!

I agree with the rest of comments here, your domain got on a list for bots or something somewhere. Check out WP Bad Bot to block a ton of different bots, plus you can redirect the traffic to someplace that "fake" views are a benefit, like youtube.

There's someone behind the bot running it, so it's a unique IP.

I wouldn't say it's a good thing or a bad thing, just that some body found your site and added it to a list of blogs that accept comments.

Yeah, I had the same problem recently, instead of 50 it was 650!!! I was being nice for a while and if they left reasonable comments I would approve them, but that is just crazy. I immediately put in a spam comment filter, and the posts seem to have gone away. Don't let this happen to you

Thanks for all your replies guys.
In fact I am not approving any comments, just a few about people that I can see they actually came and left a real comment.
All these comments are in the pending for approval and I just drop them to the spam box. But it is getting a bit hard to maintain so I will install one of the plugins you recommended, thanks a lot for that!

Today I came from work, logged in my blog and I found 66 new comments, all Spam again grrrr.

Do these plugins filter the comments in a very strict way? the blog is new and I don't want, if possible, to lose real visitors that leave a legit comment but found as spam.

    Regards!
