A Simple Method for Newbies to Make Some Starting Capital with Craigslist

Hi everyone,

One of the biggest hurdles that new marketers face is finding adequate starting capital to invest in their ideas. Most people will only need a few hundred dollars but making that first few hundred can be hard. I thought I'd share a really simple way to make some quick money that should, hopefully, be enough to get you started.

The Method

This method is actually rather obvious and there's no real secret to it. I have, however, made a few hundred dollars this month using it and it only took me 2 or 3 hours tops. It may not work for everyone and I apologize if it doesn't apply to you.

We all have stuff laying around our house. Some of us have a lot of stuff. If you're like me then you end up collecting an assortment of different things for which you don't have much use. What we're going to be doing is liquidating this stuff into cold hard cash.

Step 1

Look around your house. What do you have a lot of? What do you collect? What do you have that you simply don't need anymore? Make a quick list of everything you have that you either don't use, don't want or can really live without. Keep an eye out for things collectors might want. Antique and vintage items are good too. To be honest, though, almost anything can sell.

It doesn't have to be in perfect condition but if it is clearly used then remember this when you set a price. You should also mention this in the ad.

Step 2

Grab a camera and take some pictures of the stuff on your list. Try to take at least 3-4 pictures of each item. The pictures should be as high quality as possible. Touching them up in Photoshop is ok but only if you're simply correcting the photo, we're not looking to scam anyone, that will ruin the plan.

Step 3
Step 3 is simple. Just go to gmail and create a fresh email account. This is to keep things organized and to keep any spam that you might get out of your important email accounts.

Step 4

Go to Craigslist and sign up for an account. You don't need one to post on CL but it helps you keep your ads organized and you can repost expired ads.

Step 5

This is about writing the ad. There aren't any real secrets but I do have some tips that I think will help.

1. Choose the title carefully. Make it descriptive but try to target things that you think people will be searching for. We can call this "Micro SEO". Try to refrain from using caps and things like "WOW!" or "LOOK!". If your item may fall into multiple categories then try to use as many as possible. For example: An end table might also work as a night stand so "Beautiful Solid Wood End Table Night Stand" would be good.

2. Set a good price. Don't try to get rich off of each ad, the key here is to make a decent amount of money on multiple sales. If you think something is worth a certain amount of money then take off ten dollars. What you want is a price that people will be willing to pay.

3. Writing the body copy: People on CL like to buy from real people. Try to be authentic and personable in your ad. Give them a reason why you no longer want the item you're selling. Describe the item in detail, give height and weight specifications if necessary. If the item was expensive when you bought, or if the asking price is lower than what you paid, it can be a good idea to mention this as well.

4. Ending the body copy: Make sure to be as specific as possible when it comes to a) How much you want for the item b) That you want CASH c) That the item is PICK UP ONLY and d) When you are available and where you are located (general location i.e. "Metro Area").

5. Make sure to add the pictures you took. It's very important to have pictures. The nicer the pictures are, the better. CL lets you post up to 4 pictures.

6. Choose a good category. Many people on CL simply browse by category so try to choose one that you think will fit best. You can post another ad for the same item in a different category to increase exposure (I believe you will have to write a new ad as CL won't let you post the same ad twice).

Step 6

Post the ad. This is simple. You will need to go through a few verification steps but it's really easy.

Step 7

Make sure to check your email regularly. You may start getting responses immediately or it may take a few days. The important thing is that you respond to these emails as quickly as possible. Answer any questions they may have.

It's important to agree on the price for the item and make sure the person is clear on the details before arranging to meet. This will prevent any frustration.

Step 8

This is about arranging to meet. Some people will want to pick up the item as soon as possible. Arrange a good time to meet. I am, personally, a bit paranoid (Thirty years of living in New York City will do that) so I like to have my wife home when someone comes by.

Get the item out and put it in a convenient location and display it nicely. Greet the person when they show up and take them to the item. Let them inspect it if need be. DO NOT OVER SELL THEM! Make sure you get the money, in CASH, before the item leaves your house.

I like to help people load the items into their car and tell them it was nice to meet them when they leave.

That's it!

I know this may sound pretty simple, and it is, but I've made a few hundred in the past month by doing exactly this. The idea may be simple but it's certainly not stupid.

More importantly, this is a really great way for newcomers to get a taste for internet based sales. It involves a smaller version of pretty much everything that internet marketing requires: choosing a product, picking out keywords, optimizing ads, dealing with customers and closing a sale.

I've made a few hundred with only three sales, here is what I sold this month:

4 tall swiveling metal bar/counter Stools - my landlords left them in the basement and didn't want them anymore, they were nice and barely used but didn't fit anything in the house.

2 small stained/leaded glass panels - extricated from an old cabinet that was built into the basement of a house that was being renovated. I basically saved them from the trash.

3 larger stained/leaded glass panels - they were from the same cabinet. The first buyer only wanted the smaller panels and the second buyer was happy with the three larger ones.

All in all, it took me less than 3 hours and that includes helping the buyer take apart the chairs so they fit in her tiny car. Not a bad payout for barely any effort!

Tips

1. You can never really be sure what will sell. I put up maybe 10 ads for an assortment of items and the above list is what sold. I would suggest that you pull together as many things as you can and see what works for you.

2. Don't get frustrated. I literally had at least 10 or 15 people express an interest in the chairs, one or two even said they would pick them up "ASAP" and then just disappeared. Just keep at it, if the ad is getting responses then it will eventually sell.

3. Always remember: CASH and PICK UP ONLY. I like to write those in caps to be sure people understand it.

4. Don't give out your phone number or address until you are sure the person is going to come by. The three people I sold to all gave me their cell numbers (which I ran though Google. I told you I was paranoid) before I gave them mine.

5. Be willing to accept a reduced offer to close the sale. One buyer didn't have exact change so I reduced the price. Just keep in mind that this stuff is potentially junk to you and you'd rather have the money!

6. Try to keep the house clean when people come over. Buyers might change their mind if your house is a mess or seems dirty. Some buyers may also be concerned with smoking and allergies.

7. If the ad expires and the item hasn't sold, consider reducing the price a bit, tweaking the ad copy or adding new pictures before reposting it. CL keeps all of your ads available even if they've expired so this is really easy to do.

That's pretty much it! Like I said, this may sound a bit simple or stupid but I've made good money doing it. It's hard to get that first few hundred to use as starting capital and this can be a great way to do it. Obviously you don't have to be a newbie to do this, money is money right?

If you're interested in scaling this idea up you can always stop selling "junk" and start selling the "good stuff" in your collections. This is like selling on ebay except it's easier, there's no shipping, it's free and you get paid cash.

If anyone has any questions or needs some more advice please feel free to ask. I'm always happy to help.

Best of luck!

HAHA, I dont think your off...

I have seen many posts like this before and all are pretty similar...it was nice you added how to write the ad to make more money. Whenever a newbie asks on here how can I make money quickly, people usually refer them to this method.

Great post! When friends or acquaintances ask me how to make money online right away, I usually tell them to write high quality content at a low price. But this method might work just as well... As a matter of fact... I'm moving this week, and just sold my office chair, and having my desk and coffee table picked up later today!

I feel bad about charging too much (especially because I just want the stuff out!), but people always seem willing to pay much more than what I value the items at.

My contribution to your plan: try to sell them for as much as you can --- people will pay more than you think!

Yep this really does work well. It's simple but effective and a great way to get some cash to fund your early Internet Marketing endeavors. A lot of people over look this option. So thanks for posting.

This method works like gangbusters. You can also try your hand at brokering deals once you get comfortable. Go the wanted section, find something that's fairly high ticket. Then go the for sale section and search for it. Email the seller, tell them you are interested, is it for sale, and that you may have a prospective buyer. Then contact the buyer, tell them you have found what you are looking for and that you will give them details for a finder's fee. Arrange meeting with buyer/seller. Have them make the sale and then pay you the fee. Easy peasy.

    LEGAL DISCLAIMER.
Some states restrict you on collecting finder's fees, so be sure to check your state's regulations before you try this out or you'll get into trouble.

Great information. I wrote a whole ebook on raising cash with CL and I've been giving the book ("My Craigslist Secrets") away as bonus with some of my IM products.

The traffic that CL gets is mind-boggling, (internet alexa ranking of 47) so it dwarfs other classifieds by a mile. Also agree the advantages over selling on Ebay are numerous and get better all the time.

I'm glad everyone liked the post so much, I was afraid I was losing my touch lol

Craigslist is great. There are a few flaky people on there but, over all, it's a perfect place to sell a variety of different things including services. I used to sell a few things on ebay but with their recent changes and assortment of different fees I just don't feel like dealing with them. Craigslist is a great alternative.

If you have enough "junk" ( we all know it's not junk to a collector ) you could, theoretically, have a whole business just on CL alone.

What Nateall said is probably true as well. I tend to price things rather low because I want them to sell quickly. My wife is always complainging that I don't charge enough. Maybe I'll try posting a few things for more than I'd expect them to go for.

One great thing to do is get to know a particular type of collector's market. There are markets for everything from old glass bottles to furniture. Go to a few flea markets or garage sales and look for something related. You can then flip these on Craigslist for more than you paid. I like to think that I'm rescuing these items and giving them to people who will both love and take care of them.

Once you get an idea for what people on Craigslist want, you will be looking at everything in a different light.

Like I said before, if anyone needs any help or advice writing an ad or pricing an item just let me know!

      • I wouldn't let a buyer come to my house. Better to meet in a neutral location, like a gas station or store parking lot. That's what I do when I buy something on CL.

I remember I allowed an eBay buyer to pick up his purchase once, but I wasn't going to be home, so I left it under a cushion on the front porch. He later sent me email describing the view inside the house from each of our windows. Apparently he let himself in the back gate and went all the way around. It was uber creepy. And he didn't pick up his purchase, either.

You must have been unlucky with this buyer and the cushon. Personally not sure if I'd want to meet in a neutral place if I was buying something remotely valuable. For e.g. a smart phone or a car, if the seller wants to meet at a neutral place perhaps, it is because the good in question is stolen.

Besides doing so in craiglist, I think you can also extend to other classified ads and directories too. Since all the work is done on craiglist already, google for other classified ads or directories, and start posting on the sites may increase the chances of visitor finding you.

Excellent info and tips. You're right it's better to sell the items that we don't need and that are in good condition instead of letting them collect dust, so they benefit the buyer and seller. Thank you for your post.

I can understand why you would be nervous about having someone come to your house. To be honest, however, I think it helps instill trust in the buyer. If I was going to be buying something, for example a fish tank (which I was actually looking for) and the seller wanted to meet me "At the parking lot behind the McDonald's on the highway" I would definitely not go meet them.

Of course, I'm a big guy and I can handle myself. I had one buyer who was going to come by but then requested that I wait an extra hour as her husband insisted on coming with her. I thought it was a great idea and was happy to wait.

Thanks, I'm glad you found it to be helpful. I've been writing all of my life and I have studied things like NLP, Ericksonian Hypnosis and Cialdinian Influence and persuasion for a long time. I study a lot of things actually, most of what I know now is from me teaching myself. I have a broad range of interests and even have a whole room in my house dedicated to my library.

Thank you for the kind words, I'm glad I was able to help. I enjoy helping other people. I wouldn't know 90% of what I do now if it wasn't for other people sharing their knowledge and experience.

I truly believe that offering a high level of service is important. It's one of the basic principles of every thing I do in business and marketing. The truth is, no matter what you do, there will be competition. In most cases, your only competitive edge is the quality of your service, product and the people who work with or for you.

If there was one bit of advice I could offer to marketers it would be this:
"Customer service should be a top priority. There is nothing more valuable than a dedication to the satisfaction of your customers and clients."

This is true, there are other places. Ebay has changed, however, and I don't feel it's for the better. I tried selling a few things on there recently. The item sold quickly and for more than I had wanted but they held my payment for about two weeks. They wanted me to send out the item without having been paid for it, pay for the shipping out of pocket (it was over $10 to Canada, the whole price of the item was $15) and then hope that nothing goes wrong.

On top of that they had sent the payment to a non-existing Paypal account and not my established, verified premier account which is linked to my bank account. Of course, that didn't stop them from taking the listing fees out of the proper PP account!!

Sorry Ebay, you've lost my business. Craigslist is just so much easier, quicker and more affordable (it's free!).

It's true, if you don't need it or want it then flip it for cash! I'm a collector, I come from a family of collectors. A big part of me wants to keep all of this stuff around but a bigger part of me knows I don't need it and I would rather have the money. (I do keep the "good stuff" though, which to me are things like whale teeth and random bones, Victorian medical books, weird tikis, star trek stuff and anything medieval, just to name a few categories)

Plus, if you sell some stuff and make room you'll have a better excuse to buy more stuff later! (This is dangerous, I know lol) Just yesterday I was talking to a guy who runs what I would say is the definition of a "Junk Store". He said he started by collecting but opening his store gave him an excuse to buy whatever he wants. Can't argue with that!

Like I said before, if anyone has a question please feel free to ask it here or PM or email me.

Have you never heard of the Craigslist killings? Both men and women have been murdered because of Craigslist ads, and not just a few.

I would strongly advise any woman placing an ad to meet the potential buyer in a public place. Even Craigslist recommends this, for pete's sake.

I have heard of them, they happened in Long Island, not far from where I was living in New York City. I did say, in the OP, that you might want to have someone else at home with you and that I generally have my wife here as well.

Before you meet with anyone make sure they have given you some contact information like their cell number. Run it through Google and make sure it's legit. If you find any personal information then run that through Google as well.

Give the person a call and talk to them before you decide to meet up, if they seem like a weirdo then cancel the meeting. Look through your peephole or out your window when they ring the doorbell and don't let them in if they creep you out.

The "Craigslist Killings" victims were mostly people selling certain illegal adult services and meeting late at night in secluded places. They weren't murdered because of CL ads, that's a misleading connection.

It's up to you really, if you want to meet somewhere other than your house that's your choice, I guess. I'm not going to argue lol

Might be hard to drag a dinning room table to Starbucks though.

Great share of info on how to sell your unwanted items just laying around the house collecting dust. I have sold some unused furniture in the past and made some descent money from it. So it is possible to make a starting capital from craigslist.

I remember it was a medical student who was holding up hookers in a hotel room. He was just taking their money but eventually killed one of the female sex worker because she refused to give him her doe.

Meeting the public place is definitely a good idea for safety reasons.

I'll be honest I feel the same way as the poster above me (general public).

This isn't even useful for newbies imo. I mean this is like literally the FIRST day you sit down on your computer and type into google "how to make money online" then you find about 10,000 articles telling you to sell stuff you already own on ebay or cl.

I just can't tell you how many times I've already read information like this. So the second I realized this was about selling what you already own, I just stopped reading. Not trying to be rude I just don't see the value. If you can teach people how to consistently source products
however, that WOULD be valuable imo, as thats nearly ALWAYS the main problem with selling on either CL or ebay. "Where can I *consistently find goods to profit off of".

I'm sorry if you didn't find any of this information useful. Sometimes it's not the information that is presented but how it is presented that is important. This is something I learned tutoring fellow students in school. Other people have said they've found this useful so it's not completely without value. You could be selling the engine to a '76 Trans Am, I have no use for it but that doesn't mean it's without value.

If you've heard it all before then why not take action and make some money?

As for finding stuff to sell, well, that's even easier than selling the stuff! (Trust me, I speak from experience) You just have to get creative and know what you're looking for. I have enough stuff to at least run a regular flea market table if not a small sized store (just ask my wife).

Here are some places where I routinely find great stuff:

      Flea Markets
Flea markets are great. Some are better than others. I look for a "high junk factor" by which I mean a lot of tables with a large assortment of random old stuff. This is where you can find some of the best gems for any collection.

      Garage/Yard Sales
These are basically the offline equivalent of Craigslist. The best part is that most people will just want to get rid of the stuff and will happily offer you a good deal, especially if you're buying a few things.

      Goodwill, Savers, Salvation Army etc
These are sort of the retail equivalent of the garage sale. These places are great because they're open almost every day and have new stock coming in constantly. Most of the time these places won't bother to look up how much something is worth and will just randomly assign a low price to it. I was at Savers today and almost got a $400 suit for $15 (pants didn't fit). The best part is that buying from these places helps support charity.

      Junk Stores
These are the independent equivalent of the above locations. Some stores will be "Antique Stores" and may charge a lot. Others, like the store I mentioned earlier (It's called Tome Traders and is located here in my town) are real junk stores. This one in particular is literally a warehouse just filled with piles of different types of junk. My wife found some great chairs for only $30 all together.

      Basements and Attics
I've had friends and family members ask me to help them clean the junk out of their basements and attics. They usually say something like "I can't pay you but you can keep whatever you want." There are some real treasures in people's basements, that's where I found the stained glass panels.

      The Trash
Dumpster diving can be good fun and driving around on trash night can be great too. I've found a lot of things that people were simply throwing out, from old military uniforms to functional computers, televisions, office furniture and boxes full of old comic books, just to name a few.

My favorite trash find was a somewhat rare first edition copy of a book which turned out to be worth at least $100 (It's a history of magic and occultism, definitely on the "keep" list for me) In fact, we furnished the apartment I grew up in with antique glass doorknobs, fixtures and glass paneled doors which we pulled from renovation dumpsters!

      Renovations
Speaking of renovations, if you know someone who is going to be renovating their house you can often ask them for first crack at some of the stuff. Architectural salvage can bring in big money. I like to keep an eye out for old hardware like door hinges, knobs, lock and latch sets and stuff like that. I have a box full of stuff like this from the 19th century and this stuff can fetch some good money in the right market. Even handmade nails can be worth a lot.

      Offer to Remove Junk
This can be great if you have a pick up, van or other large vehicle. Junk removal is big business these days and I've known more than a few companies that have made a lot of money doing this. Not only do they get paid to remove the junk but they sell anything of value and scrap things like metal pipes. They just use the service fee to outsource the dirty work.

      Craigslist
Let's not leave this out. Sometimes people will just be getting rid of stuff. If you see something that you know you can sell for more than the seller is (maybe you know someone specific who will want it) then go for it!

The important thing, when looking for stuff, is to know what you're looking for. If you have a good idea about what sells (or what you can make sell) then you'll have an easier time finding stock. It's also a lot of fun to go out and find things. I get a real thrill out of finding something that is potentially worth hundreds for little or no money.

Like I said before, you can never be sure what will actually sell so it's best to stick to things you know. My friend used to make good money selling Transformers figures to collectors on the net. I know nothing about these toys so I wouldn't be able to sell as many for as much as he did. My brother loves comic books and he knows more about them than I do so I leave that to him.

I will, however, just give you guys this one warning:

Don't go crazy with buying stuff. It's very easy to buy waaay too much stuff and have nowhere to put it. I've learned that I need to be more conservative in what I buy and only spend money on "good stuff".

If anyone has anything (mostly antique stuff, weird stuff and old books) and they'd like to ask me if it's worth anything then please email or PM me, I love doing that sort of thing!

Edit: Here is a good rule to follow when looking for inventory:

If you want it then someone else will too

why not make more money by posting your detailed pics on a website and make it very adsense-clicker friendly aka confuse browsers into making you some extra via adsense?

Why not just start your own online junk store? Like I said before, I have enough inventory to support a small store. I just don't feel like dealing with shipping and payment processing, that's why I use Craigslist.

Thanks for posting this! I had not thought of this and I am in need of some cash. Now I can kill two birds with one stone: get rid of some junk and raise money I need to invest in furthering my IM education.

    Again thanks, swtp43 (alex)

Great Craigslist advice. I've sold many things on CL including services. I've also bought products and used services off of Craigslist, they are all kind of 50/50 chancing it when using it but works great.
