Moving a site out of GoDaddy

Hi,

I got new hosting with justhost because when I was a stupid noob I bought godaddy hosting.
I want to move my site to the new hosting but godaddy seems to want to make it hard to do - just wondering if anyone knows step by step how to do it?
Thanks a lot.

Is your new web host not transferring your site for you? They should be...

Anyway, you will need to export your databases (if any) and import them at your new host. If these are Wordpress sites, you'll need to change the server details in the configuration file.

For the files themselves, you can use FTP to download and then upload them.

I would suggest contacting your new host and asking if they can help take care of this for you if you're not too technically inclined.

If all of your sites are running on WordPress, there are plugins that can handle backing up your posts and whatnot; having said that, they won't be anywhere near as good as a straight copy of your SQL databases from GoDaddy to your new hosting provider.

You can get WP backup information here: WordPress Backups « WordPress Codex

Every one of you forgot the key factor when trying to leave GoDaddy:

You must give up your first born child and then sacrifice two goats, a deer, and a baby seal. That is the only way they'll let you leave.

Here's a QUICK explanation of what you need to do if you're moving a Wordpress site:

    1) Export your database. You'll be saving a file with a name such as "db_name.sql"

    2) Go to your new host and create a new database, and a new DB user for that database.

    3) Using PHYMyAdmin, import your file from step 1. This will give you a duplicate version of your old database.

    4) On your old site download wp-config.php and then edit the file by changing the database name and password to match your NEW database / password.

    5) Use FTP to download all of your site files.

    6) Upload your site files to the new host.

    7) Change your DNS settings on your domain to point to the new name server of your new host.

    That's it.

I am going through the process right now. I just paid someone on fiverr to move the site for me. All I have left to do, is transfer/convert the domains to point to the right name server.

Check first with your new host. Hostgator for example, will move a site for free for a first time customer, and several sites if you buy a resellers account. If not a first time customer, they do it for a nominal fee.
Definitely worth checking with your new hosting company.

You said your moving to JustHost in your opening post. JustHost will move your website over, contact them about it. If they won't do it go with a different host.

For what it's worth, I'm currently in the midst of moving a bunch of sites. They're going from Bluehost over to WebFaction.

I was going to pay someone. But I was enjoying learning to do it myself, and I love understanding the process now. It's WAY easier than I thought.

If you don't need cPanel (or feel you've graduated beyond it), I am a big fan of WebFaction right now. The big difference is the hierarchy that it supports.

Allow me to explain why this matters for website owners.

First, you always have a default domain you can test on. It will be username.webfaction.com

Next, you can create an "application" in their system. Say you create an app called "MyBlog". You then get a working directory called "MyBlog" in which you can place your files.

Now create a "website" record, which is just another area of their control panel where you assign the MyBlog app to a website. Let's pretend the website is named "MyBlogSite". When creating the website you tell WebFaction what domain / subdomain / path to assign your app to.

So let's pretend you're moving a blog and you want to make sure it looks right before you change your DNS settings.

You just create a new app, create a new "website" record to assign the app to, and you have it assigned to your default username.webfaction.com domain. You import your database and upload all your Wordpress files. You make 2-minute tweaks to wp-config.php and to 2 database entries. Now your blog is running on your test domain IN PARALLEL with your live domain. So you can make sure you're happy before you change back the database (to point to your actual domain) and migrate your DNS to the new name server.

And you can ALWAYS run a parallel test installation of any site on WebFaction. That's what I find so darn cool about it.

Just thought I'd share for those who haven't heard of them before.

Does anyone happen to know the fiverr gig for moving sites that was mentioned on this thread?
I would really like to know because this is not really my forte.
Or maybe someone who is experienced in this could come on teamviewer and give me a bit of help? Would be really appreciated.
      Thanks a lot.
