Domain name and keywords

Hello guys i have one question for you.

Having the keyword inside the domain name helps you to rank better on google , i know that , but what if i want a website like lets say : internetbikes.com and its taken but internet-bikes.com its available , if i would want to rank for the keyword " internet bikes " would the website internet-bikes.com still help me rank? or the fact that has a " - " between the words is not very good ?

Cheers Nick.

    Hi,

Google is capable of reading both versions. I don't think that'll make any difference. In fact, I tend to prefer my keyword-based domain names with dashes, because they're more human readable.

Yes, the search engines do not include symbols in results

So say you had a page or description that says " Hey watch me on the Internet as I take on the toughest Bike course.

That would still rank. Goto Google search and type Internet + Bikes

I rank most of my sites with dashes. It should not be a problem.

Some speculation on my part, but I see no negatives to the 'hyphenated' approach, as long as it's not over-board. My own personal rule of thumb is a single hyphen, and MAYBE a double hyphen if I think I stand a chance at ranking it (I only have 2 domains that have double hyphens). In fact, for a 2-word Exact Match domain, I would prefer a hyphen as opposed to a 'prefixed' word (in other words, I wouldn't choose to get 'theinternetbikes.com' in your example; I would actually prefer internet-bikes.com if internetbikes.com was taken).

In your example, I could see the support for those KW to be three-fold:
Relatively weaker support for single KW's 'internet' and 'bikes' (hey, atleast SOME chance of ranking there...), and then slightly stronger support for the phrase "bikes internet" (although probably lowest search volume) and probably strongest support for "internet bikes" (and hopefully good search volume to make it worthwhile).

Oh one more thing (rumor) google does a kind of key word density test. the amount of the actual keyword by the rest of the keyword. so the more words like my, site, and hyphens you add you are lowering the keyword density of the URL.
