Hello all. I learned very valuable lessons over the past week that I thought I would share with everyone. Open your eyes to the two words below.

Vulnerable - exposed to the possibility of being attacked or harmed. Naive - showing lack of experience, wisdom or judgement.

Not very positive words, are they? Well, I just want to stress, especially to the newbies out there, that if you open yourself up, anything can get in. Now, I know that sounds bad but it can truly turn your world upside down if you allow it. Prevent it!

Keep antivirus software on your computer ALWAYS! Common knowledge, but oh so important....we open and accept files from so many people here, just imagine the possibilities and overall, be careful! Someone could take EVERYTHING from you in the split on an eye.

Action is important, but don't get into such a rush that you skip over the terms of service for anything. You should ALWAYS know what you are accepting.

It could be just one simple mistake, one button pushed, one file accepted that could create the biggest and baddest whirlwind ever. So, just be careful out there!

There are no mistakes in life, only lessons! Hope this helps someone out there...

good lessons to be learned by everyone regardless of your experience with the internet. always be wary when you're online and use common sense. i read/hear stories of people getting scammed using the dumbest tactics and i feel bad for them as everyone of those things could have easily been prevented.

I recommend a powerful software call MalwareBytes that is extremely effective even against the most powerful of viruses.

    Those are great advices Petersk,

Common sense is the best tool that you have, though now days its not enough to be safe online, as atacks get more and more sophisticated.

In my opinion, antivirus is a must have in your security toolbox.
    Other things should be :
Good anti spyware (if you run windows)
Best practices (passwords, email and internet usage)
Frequent security audit scans (PC and your sites/blogs)
    Backups
    Security awareness

Very true!! And no matter how boring it may seem, create a system to ensure that the critical files on one's computer get backed up on a regular basis! (Ideally, daily.. especially if the files are being opened/edited/saved often!)

Thanks for the other pointers everyone! Spyware and daily security scans, as well as backing up files - important.

All of these security essentials + common sense = Prevention!
