Hi all,

I've just set up a blog but I can't get the categories working right.

If you look here you'll see what I mean.

If you go to "Blog" you'll see I have 1 post. I set it to show in both the "Blog" & "Uncategorized" sections. BUT, if you click on "Uncategorized" you'll notice that the url/permalink shows http:// marketingwithmichelle.com/finally-blog/. Which is the same url as the actual post.

Shouldn't this be http:// marketingwithmichelle.com/uncategorized/ or something similar? I can't get my head around it! Any help would be great!

Cheers,
Michelle

      Hi,

No, only the one post. But it's set to show in both categories.

As for the home page... I'm still adding content. I'm just testing the structure first.

      Cheers,
      Michelle

and in the Uncategorized you have a different permalink which is,
Finally... A Blog! | Marketing with Michelle

If you don't have one of theses set to nofollow it can be seen as duplicate content, and why does your homepage have no content on it?

if i understand correctly the issue. it is because your permalinks are set to postname

therefore the url does not display the category.

no need to change it, but if you want the categories in the url then set permalinks to
    /%category%/%postname%/

    hope that helps

UGHHH... Almost there! That's fixed that problem, but now my post pages don't work, i.e. if you click on the post in "Uncategorized" it should take you to http:// marketingwithmichelle.com/finally-blog/ but now it can't find it.

Can I fix that somehow? It seems to be a common set up on a lot of blogs I've seen but I can't for the life of me figure it out! Thanks!

I'm not sure i follow, but i think maybe you need to go into the post, check the permalink url at the top near the title is correct for where you want it located.

Viewing the source markup of your blog shows %postname%. This is a problem that could be caused by your theme, plugins, or any custom code you may have added in functions.php that deals specifically with permalinks.

      - Check WordPress Address (URL) and Site Address (URL) under Settings to make sure your url is correct.
      - Check your Permalinks settings and resave.
      - Check your plugins. Deactivate one at a time to see if any plugins are causing it.
      - Check your theme. Change it to WordPress' default theme twentyeleven to see if your theme is the problem.
      - Check any custom code.

Without actually seeing what the problem is myself, the best thing to do would be to reinstall WordPress without any plugins, custom themes, or custom code, and then test out a permalink structure. Make sure you backup your database and files before deleting and reinstalling.

Log into WordPress admin and click the Posts link (located on the left side of your screen within the main navigation menu). Within Posts, click the Categories link. Then click the category that you want to change. Within that screen you can change the name and slug of that category.

I believe you can change the category names under the Posts tab.
Sites coming together I see. Would recommend a new theme and a nice cache plguin.
