Will Someone Explain Buying Ad Space VS Buying Links

Can somebody clear this up and explain the difference between buying ad space on a relevant site VS buying links to a site. I understand that Google frowns on us buying links, but what about buying ad space from a site that's relevant to your niche? Isn't that kind of the same thing? ASSUMING buying ad space on a site is ok in Googles eyes, why is that ok and buying links is a no no. What am I missing here? It seems like the same thing to me..

If I buy ad space and have a banner of my blog placed on a relevant site, will Google penalize me?

Buying banner ad space is perfectly fine and is what makes the internet world go 'round (at least monetarily). As a matter of fact, Google sells ad space itself through the Google Display Network (related to but separate from Google Search advertising), so you can buy banner ads through them and know they won't penalize you for it.

Buying ad space is fine according to Google, but trying to buy links is bad to Google because by doing so you are trying to manipulate Google's search engine
