Issue with Wordpress...

I want to finally create my blog, but the one thing I can't do is download wordpress to create it. It has to do with the laptop I'm using so there is no way around that, for now. From reading on the Forum, I can tell that it is the preferred way to go. What is the next best thing? Do it online with wordpress, blogger or maybe create it with Weebly - or is that a bad idea? I remember reading that Weebly is bad because you can't transfer it or something like that. I just found Weebly's setup to be so easy for a beginner. Or is it better just to buy a website to start with? Any advice would be great - thanks!

What hosting do you use? If you have HostGator you can scroll down in cpanel and find FANTASTICO DELUXE - that is the Easiest way to install WordPress on your blog.

Or are you trying to have a free blog hosted by wordpress or blogger? In which case I would recommend getting some dirt cheap hostgator hosting and a domain name of your own, it will serve you far better in the long run.

You don't "download Wordpress" to your personal computer or laptop (unless you are a super-techy person or a developer). You buy website hosting, then you install Wordpress to your account. Many web hosts offer a simple install using "Fantastico." Once you have Wordpress installed, you can modify the look of your blog, install different themes, etc. It's all done online.

If you don't want to pay for hosting, you can use one of the free sites like Yola or Weebly. Again, the editing of your site is all done online.

If you open a free account at wordpress.com you can start now. Free hosting, free themes, upload any content you want .. images, videos, photos... You control users and comments ... site may be public or private ... support through documentation and Forum. You may have text ads on site if your traffic packs up, but haven't seen any in site we use as a "club" site. You can export or delete site if you decide to change hosts.

The downside: You can only use plugins furnished. No Flash, No Java Script. No e-commerce or affiliate marketing links. If you're shooting for a money making blog, its no good. If you just want a free blog private or public, its the easy way out.

There are low-cost hosts out there which have ready-to-deploy WordPress installs. Quality hosting can be had for as little as $35 or so per year (after coupons). That's not even $3/monthly. There's no need to suffer through free hosts, or even the large overloaded hosts.

As others have said you don't need to download anything to install wordpress.

Have you bought a domain name and linked it up to a hostgator or similar service which gives you cpanel hosting?

Also it's worth creating a list of up to 5 blogs that you like the look of, and finding out what theme's they're using then paying someone to install the appropriate theme and show you how to create new content.

Between the warrior forum and sites such as fiverr you should be able to get started easily enough.

Interesting topic, probably ends up in the warrior support forums but contrary to some popular thoughts I will opine at least as a representative of the opposite opinion.

There are a number of very good reasons why you should learn how to download wordpress.

If you ever want to learn about how websites work and how to maintain your website then yes you will have to download and learn how to manually install wordpress.

It really is not that hard to do, yes you will have to learn how to use Cpanel to upload files and to configure wordpress, you will have to learn how to use Cpanel to setup a database, and assign a user id and password to that database.

Again its not that hard to figure out, yes it might require some reading or take advantage of one of the many free videos that are available, you can even head on over to this website and learn it all.

    Wordpress Websites.

Besides all those very good reasons, there is one reason why you really need to install wordpress manually, it is called the identity factor.

When you use an automated script installer, like others have suggested in this thread you identify yourself to the server as close to a super user account.

    LAMP,

    Linux, Apache, MySQL, PHP

When you use a script identified as a user which has privileges above your access level, which is what your doing when you use one of those automated scripts, you have to do so with an identity that is capable of performing actions that result in the installation of the wordpress script.

So, later lets say you decide to create a membership and you use a complex plugin, which runs on PHP and uses wordpress, you might very well end up with a permission issue because you are no longer using the identity you formally used to install wordpress when you later attempt to make a change or a modification you are now a different identity, you could have some problems.

Now most of the time this is not a problem, but unless your on a dedicated server in which case we would not be having this discussion anyway, you are not running the box, which means that someone could come in and install a permissions based utility then again you might have a problem.

One final thought, of all the wordpress websites that get hacked most of them are installed using an automated script, had two clients that called in this morning saying they had been hacked.

sure enough when asked if they installed manually or not, they did not.

Out of 45 websites this morning the only two that got hacked had been installed using an automated script installer,

I think that really should tell you everything you need to know...

Use QuickInstall if you are hosting with HostGator, otherwise sign up at wordpress.com

On many hosts, you don't need to download WordPress to your computer at all. Some of them will install it automatically using a Fantastico script (or other), otherwise you can just go to an internet cafe and download it and upload to your server as this only needs to be done once.

if you're a complete beginner I would recommend using the hosted version of Wordpress. This will give you experience in blogging and from there, you could move to a self-hosted, paid option. There is no point in spending time/money if it's your first attempt, because more often than not, blogs get forgotten about and abandoned within months!

As I have mentioned on the other thread, for you to be guided, you should check youtube and search for wordpress tutorials. I am positive, that will make your life easier.

Hence, able to make your own research is very important.

If you are having a problem downloading WordPress to your computer then ask a friend to use their computer and save the WP download to a USB thumb drive. It could also be your virus software or firewall that may not be allowing you to download WordPress. Through your hosting account you can auto install WordPress but there can be security risks. It is better to do a self install of WordPress. Since this is your first website, just get a good web host like Host Gator and do an install via the c panel. There are some web hosts that will also install WordPress for you when you sign up for their hosting service. As you advance and learn, move on to doing your own manual install of WordPress.

So step 1, get a domain name, Step 2 find a good web host, Step 3 ask them to install WordPress, then go to YouTube and type in WordPress tutorials there are many helpful videos available.
