Install Wordpress in the root directory of your hosting (/www or /public_html).

What does HostGator have anything to do with it? Any web host using cPanel will most likely have an installer.

    Yeah, I would just re-install.
The most common reason I see is because the .zip file 'unzips' as a /wordpress/ folder : If you simply upload this folder to your www-root, then your install directory becomes mysite . com /wordpress (undesired).
So, to avoid this, when you FTP (or however you get the files up there), upload the entire contents of the /wordpress folder, instead of the folder itself. This effectively puts all files/folders "up" a level in the directory tree.

The shorter answer is: it's in /wordpress because that's where you put it Hopefully those instructions help a little bit though.

Also: I would suggest (if the site is newer) to not over-complicate things by attempting to "move" what you have now. Just simply re-install.

Good advice up top. This stuff is confusing when first starting out but it will get easy, don't worry.

Does your host have Fantastico? If so, they probably have a vid on how to setup a wordpress site. If you're still confused check out Youtube. They will have a ton of how to vids on this I bet. This is what I alwasy do when I'm stuck.

That makes life so much easier.

Make sure you have deluxe hosting or unlimited hosting. This allows you to host as many domains as you please on 1 hosting account.
Be aware that as with any shared host, the "busier" your site gets, the "slower" it will feel. You need to be willing to upgrade to a VPS or Ded server if your site ever gets some REAL traffic. That being said, most of my sites do just fine.

      So, for starters:
Installing Wordpress on GD hosting is Cake.
Launch your hosting control center ('My account' button after login, expand the hosting flap, then click "Launch".)

On the right side after launch, Click on the Wordpress Application, then hit "install now". It will walk you right through it from there. When you get to the choice about install directory though, erase the directory name (it defaults to /wordpress ) . If you don't do that, then you're just running around in circles

As others have noted here, some shared hosting environments are not well suited for WordPress, For a starter account host gator is a good choice and you will be miles ahead in the long run. If you want to install wordpress on a good host, (not godaddy) have a look at this series of videos that will guide you through the process of learning wordpress.

    Video

I know godaddy can be a real pain to setup wordpress it will work but if you want to get serious about developing a good website you need better hosting where you get your own IP address and you get your own MySQL connection (not shared)

I have used godaddy in the past but I found it was causing me some minor irritations that in turn created lost time.

If you need help once you decide what you want to do with your website PM me I would be glad to guide you through the process,

Some great info has been given here, and I can only add that if you need assistance with Godaddy you should call them up, they are usually pretty good at giving guidance. Just make sure to double check everything to avoid any bad surprises.

Usually for me when I install a Wordpress site with Godaddy I am giving the option to include that line with the words "wordpres" and all I have to do is erase that line from the folder name so it won't be part of the domain name.

I think what most people here are trying to tell you is that you've installed Wordpress in the wrong place. You've created a sub-directory called Wordpress and installed it in there. It's an easy mistake to make, especially if you are using Fantastico as it is so tempting to fill in the "install in directory" field.

The trick is to leave that empty so that you install in the route directory of your domain. Try again, but this time leave "install in" blank.
