How did traffic to my website explode overnight?

Depending on the tracking software you're using, your counter could be registering bots that have gotten stuck somewhere and are registering multiple hits on your site. Hopefully, it's that your site just went viral.

There are some cool paid ones, but all you really need is Google Analytics, which you can find here: Google Analytics Official Website - Web Analytics & Reporting ? Google Analytics

Do some Youtube searches if you're having trouble installing it. It's pretty simple. You just put the HTML code that they give you in a common template such as your footer or header template on your website. Hope that helps.

  It shows you where all your traffic is coming from, how much you got, and what search terms were used in the search engines, plus a whole lot more. You should definitely start researching it Your site is off to a good start, so it will be worth it! Good Luck!

if you dont know what youre doing right, you cant improve what youre doing..
Analytics should be the first things you set up.
But if you know you got 250 hits, then you should have access to data to say where that 250 came from

I have AWSTATS and get clicky to show me the traffic and what search keywords are used but that don't explain to me why the traffic exploded like that, i am trying to figure out what made it increase dramatically, most of the visitors land on the main page using mostly search terms like children stories.

Try searching each of your main keyword phrases in Google (make sure you are logged out, or use a different browser than you're used to) to see where you rank. Then keep track of your rankings for each keyword, and see how your rankings change every week. I use Market Samurai to keep track of these, but here's a cool FREE tool (no affiliation) I use to see where my keywords are at in Google search positioning: Rank Checker

If there is no analytics installed, log-in to your cpanel and check the webstat and awstat. You will find out how and where the traffic came from.

awstat stats are grossly inflated by bots and whatnot. Almost useless. Figure Google Analytics out and install that, it will tell you in the future what's going on.

I also have a blog that I don't post to that gets 10-15 visitors a day. I don't look at its analytics except once in a blue moon. I checked sometime in March, and noticed that for one day only in January, I had like 200 visitors. Then it was back to 10-15 a day. Could never figure out where they came from, or if they were real visitors. Google Analytics couldn't help me identify the source of the traffic. Hopefully your traffic will continue to stay at 250

Hostgator have a nice function to auto enable Google Analytics, directly from cpanel, all you need to do is paste the tracking ID in the box that pops, real easy

It depends on how you've been getting traffic thus far.

If your main source of traffic is SEO then almost for sure you just got a great position for one of the keywords you are targeting with the site and that's where to traffic is coming from.

If it's a consistent kind of traffic and it holds for longer period of time, then you sure are in the good eyes of search engines.

If the site's traffic is inconsistent, then it might just be a search engine dance wherein the position in the search results keep wobbling from 1st page to nth internal pages.

I can't believe that you have been adding content from the month of May 2012 and you are not aware of Google Analytics yet. If you are still unaware, please search for the same in this forum or ask any one politely.

Watch it for a few days to see if it was just a fluke. If you had some good content on a particular page (looks like there was one listed above that was getting the majority of the traffic), someone probably linked to it.

Type the URL of the popular page into Google's search box and see if you can find out who linked to that page. It might be worth doing some kind of Joint Venture partnership with them if it's someone with a related product or blog.

Someone help me out here...there's a tool (either from Yahoo or a Firefox plugin) that lets you easily find out where all the inbound links are coming from. I can't remember what the tool is. I think that will help figure out why there was a sudden jump in traffic (if it was from an incoming link).

getclicky should tell you where the traffic is coming from (that's what you are paying for).

On the main dashboard for your site (assuming you haven't to changed it) in the left column, there are two boxes 'links' and 'searches'. Links tells you traffic that came by clicking a link on some else's site, and searches tell you the keyword that was searched for.

Also, in the bottom right there is 'traffic sources', that will also tell you.

I would definitely stick with cpanel.

With google analytics it's good to see what's happening, but when you set that up not only can you see your data, but everyone else can as well.

Stick with cpanel programs like awstats that way you will keep little to no competition.

How are you tracing your traffic. Because if you are using the Cpanel or Google its normally quite accurate. However, if it is a CMS site and you have on site analytics its normally not very accurate. The majority on site CMS analytics tools pick up all the bots. So if it comes to a time where there is search engines or spammers which normally happens later in the evening you will find the site figures shoot up.

If you're questioning where your traffic comes from, you should use a tracking tool to measure your daily traffic as well as sources.

I like to use Google Analytics and StatCounter.

I would chalk it up to trends. A lot of mothers now are searching stuff for school and the up coming holidays. I have never met an unorganized mother in my life.

It looks like traffic is dropping, now I am getting about 100 visitors a day down from about 300 at its peak.

You have to be careful when looking at your stats. There was a very recent PR update (all my sites changed, all increased 1-2 points) and if you got a PR1 it means the G-bot visited your site, and many tracking tools will add the visit to the visitor count together with other bots which can elevate the UV count and at times have the bots be recorded as more than UV (I get this with my current tracking program).

What has happened is that your site went up in organic traffic when awarded the PR1, received a lot of traffic at this time and you have now stabilized at the SE rankings (as other sites got their new PR). Fairly normal, the important thing is that you have been awarded a rank in this mini PR update so you are doing things good.

Keep doing what you are doing.

Anything can explode your traffic overnight. Slightly lucky, but an improvement in ranking or some sort of backlink to your site getting seen by a tonne of people can have this effect.

If you have cpanel for hosting just check your Awstats for the top keyword phrases. I notice you have Wordpress GA plug in installed, is it set up correctly ?

Also you have adsense and channels set up, your adsense impressions should have went up much the same as your traffic, if it didn't then there is an issue with the direct traffic and it may be inaccurate stats.

Get some counter for your site, like statcounter or similar, don't use anything from google. They already know too much about each of our online moves and have too much power in their hands, no need to give everything to them.
