Celebrity Web Sites... Where do you get your photos?

Thank you. That source is a bit like PR photos. I can't compare prices without making an account. Only problem with photos like these is they, like PR photos, are more geared towards the kind of photos celebrities want you to have. That is interesting, also, but I'm really interested in, at least, some candids.

I think this is the way. One of my friend use these resources. He just put a caption below images saying ( Image Credit: Source Name)

This is definitely the easiest way. As well, it helps to make friends with photographers in the industry, as they'll likely be willing to sell you original photos at a low cost.

Am I alone in finding it just breathtaking that internet marketers can genuinely imagine that this is so? People seriously believe that crediting the source in the way described above makes it ok/acceptable/safe/proper to steal images from news/media websites?

I'm no lawyer, but in my opinion you guys are deeply mistaken.

There are agencies who make a living just by scouring the web for sites like this, finding probable breaches of copyright, identifying and notifying the copyright owners and offering to have their lawyer act for them on a "no damages, no fee" contingent basis.

Many hosts will also be reasonably quick to remove such sites when the copies of all the DMCA notices start arriving, because they know from experience the kind of sites that cause them problems in this regard, but the removal of such sites actually does their owners a favor by limiting their potential future liability.

Just be aware that people posting in forums, so casually saying things like "Yes, that is the way to do it properly" ( ) won't still be there "advising you" if you get into trouble, and it won't be their responsibility or their problem - they'll be off advising someone else, by then.

I can go downtown and see guys selling drugs on the corner too. That doesn't mean it's legal. You don't get to use other people's pictures/content simply because you're calling it curation. And the Forbes article doesn't even address the issue of copyright. Nowhere does it say it's ok to use pictures that don't belong to you. Oh, by the way, you know that website named Pinterest? Here's what they have to say about what you're advocating:

That, my friend, is stealing. Calling it curation doesn't change that. These organizations pay big bucks to be able to use these pictures. You may get away with it, but that doesn't change what it is. But, if you don't believe that, take PatriciaJ's advice and curate some Getty images, and see what happens. I'm sure they'll cut you some slack if you tell them it's curation, and point them to the Forbes' article, lol.

I highly suggest you do some proper research before giving other people advice. What you are saying is just plain wrong and ILLEGAL.

If I walk into an electronics shop and take a television from the shelf and walk out the door, is that ok then so long as I put a sign on the television telling people where I stole it from? Sounds ridiculous doesn't it? Well that's EXACTLY what you are saying. You are telling people that stealing other people's content is fine provided they credit the source they stole it from.

You have no right to use images that you do not own the copyright to whether you include a little credit line or not -- it's irrelevant. If you do not own that content and do not have permission to use it then what you are doing is illegal.

That's not up for debate -- that's F.A.C.T.

So I wish you would stop telling people otherwise.

Really Will? All I asked was where to get the photos for a celebrity blog. I didn't ask for rock bottom cheap photos. There are legal resources besides me getting on a flight, camera in hand, but thanks for your input? :confused:

Ok, well if price isn't the issue then here you go:

You'll find all the celeb images you need there. However price might quickly become an issue when you start going through that site. But that's exactly what you can expect to pay for proper celebrity images. It's a business like any other. In fact companies like Getty images have actually created departments in their business whose sole job is to go out on the Internet and hunt down people using their images illegally. They are then able to fine each person they catch and it's become a huge part of their business model. This is why you need to be VERY careful unless you have deep pockets and good lawyers.

I'm afraid telling a judge you went to Google images and selected this option won't do much for you. There is no way to verify who has given that permission so you are standing on VERY shaky ground if this is how you search for images to use.

I would not recommend doing this at all.

Maybe if you were looking for a general image of some sort but not when celebrities are involved.

2. I love it how some people come on this forum and spread misinformation around which has the ability to get others into serious trouble.

3. We are not talking about news articles here and never were. The question was regarding celebrity images and unless you have strict permission to use that image, it is ILLEGAL.

There is a big difference between photos being placed on Pinterest for repinning and grabbing photos from news sites. The celebrity photos on news sites command big money and the photographers sell the use to more than one outlet, just like stock photo sites but with bigger money involved. You steal them the value weakens which is a very good reason for photographers wanting to protect their rights.

That is not what curation is about. When you curate you need to check to see if the material you are using is copyright and celebrity photos almost certainly are.

Using allposters.com is a good idea. I also check on Amazon for images for my music sites. I get public domain images free from Wikipedia commons sometimes, but I check the sources and terms of use and always give credit - even then I'm leary of anything they have pulled in from Flickr. I buy celebrity images from stock photo sites, but many of those can't be used for profit purposes. We would all love candid shots but unfortunately they would come with an hefty price tag and it would probably be well worth jetting off after the celebs with a camera.

Read their license agreement carefully. It will explain acceptable uses of the photos.

Having said that, using the likeness of a person for the purposes of Advertising involves their personality rights in addition to any copyright licensing issues.

Under New York State law, I have a right to preclude you from using my image or likeness for the purpose of advertising. The First Amendment protects your right to use my likeness for the purpose of news, reporting, editorializing, and criticism.

If you are going to make "commercial" use of a person's likeness, then various state laws, and the laws of multiple international jurisdictions will protect the subject of the photograph's right to prevent you from capitalizing on their name or likeness without their permission.

If you are creating a celebrity news site, and add a photo to the site of the celebrity, and you have the right under your own copyright as the photographer, or by license from the photographer to use the image, you are probably cool, even if you have ads linked besides the photo to support your website.

If you IMPLY that the celebrity is endorsing your product or a product you are advertising, WELL THAT'S A DIFFERENT STORY! Unless you get their signature agreeing to make such an endorsement.
